Let's All Build a Computer!

together, with love, for all the kids
The only PC games I ever played were half life mods. I was damn good at them but those were all I played. The simplicity, the console, the con_color 255 255 255, net graphs... the mass variety of mods. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say this, but HL1 mods allowed you to be the epitome of cheap. Free mods, and a slow computer - what else could you ask for? There is a problem however, my last computer upgrade was 2004 (not counting laptops). And it was a sh!tty hewlett-packard. I know, I know. Ugh, integrated no-name graphics card with 512 ram where 100mb was being used to power all the bs side apps (that WERE IMPOSSIBLE TO TURN OFF, even HIJACKTHIS couldn't help). I'm sorry if that made all the PC gamers cringe. But what can I say I'm cheap. At least I'm not playing 360 or ps3...

Anyways, I have no intention of spending a grand on a new pc. (allude to me bing cheap)

However, I do intend on buying and playing NS2, so I feel like I should invest in a new PC to enjoy NS2 to the fullest.

So the idea of this thread is for people to post cheap setups. Use newegg, ebay, cwaigslist; I don't care. Motherboards, rams, graphics cards. I will go back and edit this post so that there is a list of potential computers. Please include price and quality and little side information that you might now (such as graphics card x is known to consume alot of resources, overheating concerns, etc.)

Good luck

I love you all

Including monitor, keyboard, mouse, and headphones?

Min requirements are very low.... I think most low end rigs double them by default nowadays anyway.

"A 1.2 GHz Processor, 256MB RAM, a DirectX 9 level graphics card, Windows Vista/2000/XP, mouse"

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16883220013

probably the cheapest that would run it okay. I would certainly throw in a couple hundred more you cheap son of a ######. For 800 bucks you can get a setup that can run anything out there today

If you want the lowest price tag, perhaps wait for the Alpha at the very least (retail if you're willing to wait) to consider what is acceptable for you. As of today, we don't really know how NS2 runs. Expect plenty of benchmarks during Alpha, and expect retail to run better than Alpha.

Also, Atom does not run games in any acceptable manner.

Hell, for $800 you could probably buy a computer comparable to what they're developing the game on (minus the huge ass monitors they're using).

Not even close to the high end rigs there is.

I suggest you to buy Phenom II 955, Ati Radeon 5770, 4gb of ram 1333mhz(or tad slower), some nice AM3 mobo(I think cheapest one will do in your case), PSU from Corsair, Samsung Spinpoint F3 HDD. Accessories and Case is...case sensitive, whetever you like huge led cases or just plain normal white/black.

My life is sadly only about computers and i follow computer news everyday, nad trust me, that is best Price/Performance there is for now, and that set will still be viable after few years, since you dont upgrade your PC's too often. Just look for your local resellers in your country for cheapest prices and postages. It would help if we knew where you live.

Sounds like your, and i dont want to come off being an a$$, lazy as well as cheap? If so I recommend ibuypower.com or cyberpowerpc.com

On top of a good cheap gaming PC, its Pre-Built, Tested for Stability, and has a 1 year warrenty. Its Cheap, effective, and will get the job done. Pretty much any machine on their site should be able to at least play NS2 (including the laptops i believe). Im an AMD fanboy, but im sorry to say i'd go with Intel right now... They have more headroom for overclocking (Free Performance, something your cheapness will like :p )

Not everything has to be high dollar for good quality, but most of the time the extra buck will save you more money in the long run. I do cost analysis, and while waiting on a slower machine may seem okay now because you'd like to save a few $$, in the long run those min's add up, and you've waisted more time than you think. Time = $$ even in gaming.

i wouldn't say lazy. i just don't know anything about computers. i have no interest in the fandangles and the magics that make computers work. I think this thread will help those that only have an interest in playing NS2, not owning a computer that is fast for other games. i only want to play ns2.

i agree with you fully however, throwing down that extra hundred dollars will help 'in the long run.' But I am only going to play ns2. if it works good for ns2 then that's all i need.

A great place to start is http://www.overclockers.com.au/wiki/New_Sy...Recommendations

Note all prices are AUD but when I was building my latest rig, it was definitely a good starting point.

In any way, that cash is wasted then.

Plus, there's a problem. we dont know the engine's quirks yet.
If those requirements are close to the real deal you can get one of those prebuild machines for about a grand if you can grab a good price.
