Cable Ded Servers Why

Cable Servers
Iwould like to say please stop trying to tweak a cable connection for a dedicated server for more than 6 ppls
It's a waste of time...
If you have been around for any dedicated server forums for any mod of HL you would know by now that cable connections are unstable
You need a t1, t3 OCxx (if you have millions of dollars to spend) and I don;t recommend but I have seen it work ok on a dsl connection with limited plls.

My 2 cents worth

cable has a bad reputation from it's early days. There's cable then there's good cable .. same as dsl dude. To automatically assume cable is bad just shows your ignorance. My isp has a 4mb down 2mb up package that rocks the house.. eat your heart out.

Well I hit a nerve.. yes some cable connection are OK I guess .....but this is not directed to a higher end connection.. and yes cable access has come along way... on the other hand cable/DSL server are still not recognized in most leagues ( all i think but corrected me if I am wrong) as a stable server for hosting a match

    FYI

I am running a NS server on a DS2 (XDSL) that is 2.3 mb down and 2.3 mb up. She is a fast P4 1.3 ghz 4 - 7200 RPM Western Digital Drives with 1 gig of RAM. I guess to each his own.

Good for you Pharmacist... I am glad things are working out for you... I don;t want to put anyone down or try to make sharing any online game not fun....

I just want some ppls to be aware of possible problems with these kind of connections

should have been, don't overstrain whatever connection you have. Living in phoenix our cable modems can usually handle a 32 player hl game.

That's entirely possible. However, Buck's point is well taken. One of the problems with cable is that it's a shared bandwidth model on the cable line. That means all of the traffic for your neighborhood is flowing over the same line. This can become a problem because most ISPs tend to overload their lines. It also depends on how much bandwidth your ISP has on the back end. If you have 100 users on a cable network all using 1 Mb going back to a T3 line (~45 Mb) you're going to have problems. This is why cable networks often choke during "peak" hours, typically between 4 PM and midnight, since that's when all the kids are home downloading and chatting. At this point, the cable network becomes congested, often because cable companies route you through *their* network before dropping you out on the "internet". I've seen many instances where high latency is being caused by the cable companies internal network, NOT by the cable providers ISP.

This is quite different from T1's on up. Those tend to go directly to a major peering connection of some sort where they have gobs of bandwidth, often on the multi-Gb level.

Cable *is* getting better, but it is still extremely susceptible to network overloads and hence, considered unreliable. For those of you that have fast (both up and downstream), reliable cable, count yourselves lucky and don't count on it being that way forever.

Unless your like me and have an unsaturated network ppl in this neighborhood don't know enough to get cable. I know because i've serviced alot of thier computers. They are happy with thier dialup. And that it fine by me! Athough i still have a cap, its completely unsaturated.

Like all networks, there is a backend and that is always the bottle net slappy. DSL is the same way. Usually not as bad, but is your provider uses PPPoE or something like that, they tend to get the boot alot. Especially in florida. My friend serivces clients there and they complain alot about their DSL kicking on and off. PPPoE is a **obscenity**.

As far as cable goes? It really really really depends on the area you live in. Mostly, they put in the minimum. But as the market demands more, they upgrade it more and more. You may be experiencing lag spikes now, but they may demise in the future. Or They will just cap your bandwitdh more, lol!
