Gorge reveal article got me thinking. They consider making gorge armour actually absorb attacks into energy if you manage to trick people into shooting you.
Trick people into shooting you ? What ? That sounds awkward, not to mention non-intuitive and contrived. There are other ways to enable mind games and advanced options for skilled players.
-----------------------
Ability 1: Gorge swallows grenade.
There are a couple of theories explaining this phenomena. Some say (weasel words) (citation needed) that gorges do that to save their hives from damage in a heroic act of bravery. Others counter gorges are too short-sighted and gluttonous to know beter. Marines of questionable mental health claim they've seen gorges swallow grenades and suicide bomb entire patrols.
Yes I know grenade launcher is probably not going to make it into this game, but there are still handgrenades, right ?
Once swallowed, a grenade would have its timer reset. Then gorge has a short amount of time to move somewhere before it explodes from inside, covering everything around in corrosive bile*. Such explosion would be (nearly) harmless to alien lifeforms and structures. Imagine a gorge swallowing a grenade and - with some good timing - exploding in the middle of a marine patrol ! (Marine gets credit for killing gorge, gorge may get credit for anyone else killed by the explosion)
* optional - instead of dealing damage, the explosion could spread gorge's healing bacteria in a large radius, actually healing nearby lifeforms and structures.
Pros:
- allows for mind games. (Gorge knows there's a marine around and moves into likely position to swallow grenade. Marine knows there's a gorge and considers attacking with assault rifle instead, taking down gorge first. Gorge knows marine knows and has his Skulk girflriend ready nearby)
- in my opinion, much more elegant and intuitive than crouching gorge absorbing attacks into energy !
- situational. It would hardly become a reliable counter to grenades, but skilled gorge players could make marines think twice.
- muhahaha factor
-----------------------------
Ability 2: grenade "jump"
We know gorge is going to have some shield ability which allows it to fall to ground and cover vital organs. What if it also increased gorge's inertia and knockback effects ? True, it would damage gorge's dignity a bit, but cunning gorges could use grenades for faster escape and move unpredictably. This also allows for mind games - if marine knows gorge knows, he may throw a grenade AND follow with assault rifle, assuring gorge takes more damage it can handle.

Other than that, my gut says bad idea. While it does open up some nice possibilities, it feels too niche and unnecessary.
Can't help but think it's overpowered. What I think should be a more interesting new ability is that the alt fire for spit, could disable a grenade/mine on the ground and as a result maybe even convert it to an alien mine.

Would look like this? Making it in sync with the Kharaa way of doing, the mine would explode when marines get close near it instead of having to really step on it.

Sounds nice, mine conversion, I say yes :O

I'm actually leaning the other way. If the gorge became a mini damage absorbing class this would make sense. Since there are a decent amount of grenades in the game(hand nades and grenade attachment to lmg) and these grenades would directly effect the gorges' structures it makes sense for the gorge to have some sort of counter plus be more effective in a support role. I would make it so the gorge can only swallow 1 grenade every 5 seconds or so and the swallowing still does damage to the gorge but a reduced amount. Maybe it could be the gorges "movement" ability. I'm not sure if you'd want it to happen passively.
Alternatively maybe this should go on the onos which seems to be a damage absorbing class all ready ad fit its previously role as a devourer of marines. I just don't know if that would make it too "uber".
If the physics is coded right (hopefully Flayra has learned from Lerks in NS1) this would be possible, and would save your teammates in the process.
One counter to a c4 thats been dropped in base was if the alien team had a class called 'guardian'. The guardian could eat the c4 and then run into a group of humans. Thus saving the alien base and getting himself some frags in the process.
Each time you did it you would feel really good knowing you saved the aliens from the nasty humans. :)
