Section 8 is a multiplayer FPS. Think in the vein of Tribes or Battlefield where your team has to complete objectives (control points) and there are side missions that can boost the overall team score towards the victory quota. It's got squad support, and a "cash" system to buy stuff for your team like deployable turrets and aid stations.
From a friend: "On top of all that, you spawn from a dropship 15,000 feet above the map, plummeting straight to the ground with just your armor and jetpack to halt your descent. This means you can spawn anywhere on the map at any time, as long as the drop zone isn't covered by enemy anti-air. It also means that you can kill someone by dropping right on his head if your aim is good enough..."
Overall, highly recommended for epic. Plus, there's equipment loadout customization to tweak your playstyle. This is not a tactical shooter, so it takes quite a few bullets to take someone down.

Comments
Someone ought to fix that.
How large is the download?
I can't extract the contents from the beta install as it's hardcoded to extract to me C: which has 1.2GB free...
and when I try to use winzip or even 7zip to extra the contents... 2 cab files are corrupted.
>.<
I hope I can find a non-fileplanet download mirror for it or It'll have to wait until Wednesday.

ew. Have you tried looking for a torrent?
For some reason I have no sound ingame. I get sound in the trailers, but no sound or music once I get to the menu.

While zooming, you can lock-on to an enemy for a short while (aimbot-h4x). Usually it's not long enough to kill an enemy at full health, so it's pretty interesting, actually. It makes for crazy bunnyhopping sniper action, though. Takes a while for the lock-on to recharge, usually longer than the average firefight. You can also take some passive skills to get longer lock-ons etc.
The 'overdrive' thing is also pretty interesting. You can use it to travel long distances faster and make mad attempts to dodge turret fire and whatnot. Also, you can slam into an enemy to knock them back. I'm not sure if there's some kind of special action you can perform if you collide with an enemy (I thought I saw my hands go into some kind of special position right after I slammed into an enemy... I might've been hallucinating).
Then, lets see. The spawning system is of course original, but it makes the games quite chaotic. Then there are the special mission thingies. Once you've performed 'feats' (kill with different weapons :P) you can start some kind of special mission, which gives your team points if you succeed. Never started one myself, but there's a VIP, Convoy, Intelligence and a Commando mission. I'm not quite sure what each of them actually are, but I'd think they're escort (both VIP and Convoy?), capture the flag and ??? .
[edit] Overall it's been quite entertaining. I'll play more tomorrow.
[edit 2] Played some more.
I got better into the game today, as I found the equipment and module loadout I feel effective with. I chose the machine gun, sniper rifle, grenades and the repair tool (medic!). For modules I took a lot of shield and armor, plus a bit longer lock-on and some extra damage.
I also managed to kill someone by slamming into them in overdrive. I'm not sure how much damage it actually causes, since the victim was already at zero shield, about 50% health and people were shooting at him.
And finally, though the game still is pretty chaotic, now it's easier to see what's going on. Keeping an eye on the map for special icons (and listening to the announcements) is crucial. And the habit of 'looking up' I picked up from NS is extremely valuable. Seeing a fireball with no friendly-marker land nearby can thwart their attempt of a surprise attack or give yourself the opportunity to strike first.
Feels kinda NS'ish too but you can build stuff yourself.
Pretty funny if you can affort a Heavy Armour (100 resources) and grab an opponent.
Sniping works well too.
Obviously this means there's some trick to fast killing but it totally eludes me :p
The sniper feels wrong and while I'm usually a crack shot with snipers in other games I can't hit the broadside of a barn with this one. It takes about 5 shots to kill someone with it... I'm not sure if that bothers me because I can't aim the darn thing in the first place anyhoo :p
The knife seems to just slide off people without causing damage. I've always been good at closing distances before people know I'm there (though secion 8's sluggish movement makes this harder than normal) but even running behind someone who's not aware of me and slashing at their back madly produces no hits and no damage. Either there's some trick I'm not aware of, the knife is useless or it's got the worst netcode ever.
The mech's miniguns seem utterly useless. I can't even tell if they're damaging anyone. The melee attack is where it's at with infantry though smacking other mechs/vehicles yields results alarmingly similar to my knife experience (aka practically useless).
Missle launcher is totally broken... often I can fire and no rocket actually comes out. It does surprisngly little damage to structures and forget about using it on people. I hear it's a mech killer but I'll believe that when I see it as it's been patently useless against convoy vehicles and the like.
The assault rifle supposedly penetrates shields... a bit more feedback about when it's doing that or not would be welcome so I could actually judge the distance. Supposedly the crosshairs change to show this but I'll be darned if I noticed it.
I'm not impressed really. I let a friend try it, an old FPS pro himself and he was underwhelmed as well. I think it's got some interesting ideas, like the drop-in spawn and the overdrive run but the basic combat feels unituitive or random and the motion feels horrible. It doesn't feel like I'm shooting powerfully armoured foes but rather that my guns are like pea-shooters.
I may give this a few more shots to try and get my head around whatever the heck it is that allows you to kill people consistantly, I'll probably give the pistol a go as I hear it's a 4 shot kill :p
I got in a mech and cornered the VIP. Since I just melee slammed a dude to death in a cool animation, I tried it on VIP and it didn't work. I just kept hitting him like 20 times but he wouldn't die. Then he killed me. I guess VIPs have a ton of health and are invulnerable to the cool slam thing.
It's kind of fun. Probably won't end up playing it more than a couple of hours though.
<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec--><b>and a more powerful new Shotgun!</b><!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I would but downloads at home are limited until Wednesday.
However I discovered the install files on my ISPs file mirror so free download there and was happily installing after downloading that.
Played a good few hours on both sat and sunday and I'm liking it.
I hope they get more varied maps and increase the items available in the beta before launch... would LOVE to see some more of those play placed items coming into play for game mechanics.
I'm also up to 5 kills by landing on players so far =)
It's good when the enemy plant 3 health stations side-by-side and thinking standing on them make them immune... VERY small area I have to target in so a higher chance of crushing them, that and I bring the 3 buildings to around 1/2 health on landing, then 1 hit with the rocket and almost dead, so long as no other enemy around I can clear them out before reinforcements arrive. =)
The lack of lag compensation isn't too bad at mid range but it's horrifc at long range, when an enemy is using overdrive or at point blank when you shotgun someone and bodyshots do nothing but shots a couple of metres to one side scores a kill.
Sadface. Merging Battlefield with Halo is a fun concept but I just can't enjoy it. For those who don't mind leading targets I think it's passable, but- and this has always been a problem in the UT series- against opponents who strafe from side to side there isn't a steady transition in where the hitbox is, it just teleports from side to side making it guesswork.
<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->and a more powerful new Shotgun!<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Even more so because the shotgun is a pathetic excuse for a weapon. You're better off with the pistol, which has longer pierce distance and does nasty damage.
Sure it has one of the shorter pierce distances, but the power when you are in pierce range is ridiculous, it is a one or 2 shot kill.
Despite my netcode rant I still find myself clocking up gametime. Still- for me to buy it the netcode does have to change, and lock on has to removed for the PC version.
I also want a way to disable the reduced sensitivity in zoom mode.
I haven't noticed the crosshair changing. I usually pay attention to the enemys shield/health bars. When the health bar is going down, I'm at good range :P .
Regarding the lock-on issue, I see it more as a feature than 'help for nubs'. If you don't want enemies to lock-on to you, take the radar jammer tool which supposedly prevents it. That's what I did; I gave up my grenades for it, and also changed some modules to give a little better bonuses for it. Now I'll activate the jammer before I confront an enemy. Or if I'm running into an enemy controlled point, I activate the jammer right before I enter overdrive. If you do this close enough, you'll easily get into the enemy base without anyone noticing you on radar. And even if they do, they can't lock on (and turrets will ignore you).
ooo - didn't think about that part of it
After that I tend to prefer a more traditional grenades + repair tool combo. Less flexible but added survivability.
At first I liked the lockon as a feature rather than helping newbies but now I'm not so sure. It covers up some serious cracks- such as being unable to consistently hit people who are in the air or overdriving.
Also, I haven't played in a while, but iirc the MG actually has one of the longest pierce ranges, making it another wonderful gun.
Other then that. I'm not quite sure waht's is going on atm, might give it another go after I read some manual or something.
<!--QuoteBegin-"Section 8"+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE ("Section 8")</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->- Soldier needs repairs! Oki, but what am I supposed to do about it... Give him moral support?
- A control point is being hacked or what ever, WHICH ONE AND WTF AM I SUPPOSED TO DO ABOUT IT... Why is everything so far away :D<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
y'know things like that :P
Knowing what is getting hacked isn't hard as it shows up nicely on your hud (or the map), with range finding. Why is it so far away? Probably because no one is there and thus they took advantage of that.
