Alternative to knifing Resource Towers

I agree, but at the same time it has to be said knifing resource towers is tactically interesting, and made me a bit nervous while doing it. It's such a great opportunity for ambushes.
The proposed solution to this, taser, a pistol/knife replacer, sounds dangerously pew-pew to me. It also doesn't retain the tactical challenges of knifing a tower, and supposedly could be done from further away and only 1 direction.

My proposal for fixing this:
Alien Resource Towers have "eyes". The eyes are the creature's soft spots. Once an eye is shot, it fades away and resource tower takes significant damage. Even more damage for destroying resource tower's last eyes - damage could scale non-linearly so that first eyes are worth 100, then 120, 150, 190, 240, 300, 370... damage etc.
The eyes would be spread in a circle around Resource Tower, so a marine has to walk around it and shoot each eye down individually. Shooting a resource tower from afar would still work, but would be less effective because you could only target some of its eyes, and especially with non-linear damage scaling mentioned above it wouldn't be a very big bonus. Optimal, fastest way of destroying resource towers (except for grenades etc) would be walking up to it and destroy its eyes while circling it.
Eyes regrow very slowly, or not at all (would have to be fixed by a gorge).
pros:
- easy to understand
- no need to create any really new artwork, just modify Resource Tower's appearance.
- pistol suddenly becomes a viable weapon for destroying Resource Towers ! It only takes 1 hit to destroy an eye so you may as well use pistol.
- it doesn't sound nearly as boring as knifing a resource tower.
- there are choices possible: destroy it quickly from close distance, risking being ambushed, or take more time from afar. Or a combination of two.
- no need to introduce new pew-pew weapons which have high chance of not looking and feeling right. Few energy weapons in games are satisfying to use !
- creative, fun solution !
cons:
- it might be more resource intensive to keep track of each eye. Locational damage may be more demanding for the server.

Your idea doesn't fix the problem with pistolsniping nor scripted shooting.
also, resource towers have that much hp for a reason, nerfing it in one situation requires a beef up in another, like making it the bigger sister of a flesh eating flower or something - come to close and its *omnomnom*.
