Game play idea: NS and CO hybrid

<div class="IPBDescription">To NS or CO, that is the question. Why not both?</div>This idea came to me last night while playing NS1.

Someone said they hoped that Combat (CO) would not be included in NS2 (WHILE we were in the middle of playing CO, mind you - but I digress).
Then it came to me, how about taking a combination of the two and putting them together?

How about having a commander in the chair and instead of him (or her) cranking out the weapons and upgrades, the commander would assign resource points to a specific task and the soldiers that perform that specific task would get those resource points.
That would also help motivate a marine team that is not particularly into following orders - which happens a lot in NS.

The marines could then use the points to buy upgrades and weapons that fit their personal playing style.

I know the com chair is real busy already (which is why I almost never com) so maybe points could be pre-assigned to specific tasks. Like RT building is pretty important so set the reward points for building that (just pulling a number out of the air) at 20. (One thing to iron out is would each person get the 20 or divide amongst all who participate?)
...and maybe 5 or 10 for building a Phase gate.

A couple other things to iron out is would you allow the player to instantly receive the upgrade (like the current CO) or would they have to go to a station/armory to 'purchase' upgrades?
Of course upgrades would cost more than one point - but maybe instead of distributing resource points (the resource gathered by the RT's) for tasks completed, maybe a seperate "pay" points. Leave the "resource" to build and run the equipment.

By making the individual soldiers responsible for getting their own upgrades - that frees up the com to concentrate on other things.
In fact, if you keep CO's Resupply upgrade option, the com wouldn't have to worry about dropping ammo and med packs either.
(That would leave more time to allow the com to assign what they think a particular task is worth.)
So for this hybrid idea - think of it as Com Chair lite. :-)

...which is what CO was designed for, right? Designed for training purposes?
The more I think about this idea the more I like it. :-)

Just like the current CO you would get points for killing alliens and hitting the hive.

To lean the hybrid back toward the NS side, maybe not allow purchasing of some equipment until the COM has reasearched it?

What do ya'll think?

I think I would play commander and drop a base full of TFs, get people to build them and get points, recycle them, then drop more until my team was fully upgraded... then stomp over the alien team.

    Maybe I'm a bad person.

Well, you could have only marine attacks count for recieving points.

...and even though it would be borring to wait around for the map to end, since the aliens win if the hive is not killed and the timer runs out, then the aliens don't have to attack.

Besides, (if we keep the multiple hive building part from NS) the aliens can build all their hives and get all the RT's while the marines are sitting around the base waiting for TF kills.

I don't think this is going to work at all, because first: how can you prevent abuse of it lets say (as stated above) random sensless building spamming and reselling to give your team points.
second: where is the use of getting RTs if you don't need the ressources of them. third: whats the use of the commander if he just gives out orders and places useless buildings. fourth: how do the aliens get points, their commander isn't probably that much focused on building placement. fifth: techpoints additional hives and commandchairs are not necessary therefore you just cut out all the strategic value of the original "classic" game mode and make it more or less like combat is now.

sixth: the new marines can choose / buy their (equipment and) weapons on their own already in NS2 so its more or less already like combat in that way. Aliens can choose from 3 different abilities from their 3 different chambers and all their lifeforms for now so the individual player chooses its own upgrades that fit his gamestyle already.

The problem about combat now, is that it should be better educating (tactics, ambushes, movement ...) the new players and also offer some quick matches to relax after some intense classic games.
But there is already a thread about how to improve combat and there is also someone who is looking for people to make ns2 combat, so if you are interested check out the comments in the thread (don't remember the name right now) But this Combination of the two playmodes will just not work.

how about a NS mode where marines don't need to build rts and guns and jetpants and heavies and upgrades are all free from the start of the game. Then we can just be battling like it's a siege map... with strategy... with an entire team in heavies and hmgs... i mean that idea just brings a tear to my eye.

there can still be building of tfs and obs's and sieges and ocs etc...

O and one more thing... the armory should be able to remove the parasite from you and heal your armor... there that's all we need for one uber game!

we'll call the game mode: "WAR"

When NS2 is out you can makes as many game modes as your heart desires.

And thats exactly of what I am afraid of ...

Just think every admin or server owner has his own private mod for the game he always wants to play so we don't have any clean servers out there ... this could be a nightmare.
