Think not in a sense of "it's suddenly there" but a long-time evolution thing for the aliens. Initially they may never have had armor (NS1) yet after trial and error and hive mind experience an adaption to the quick death of onos led to an internal re-write of DNA to form a solid coating of bone (IE: armor) increasing expectancy. Also allows bashing of solid metal doors / walls / objects to allow breaking through obstacles.
Take the Millipede for example as quoted from wikipedia <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->protecting their delicate legs inside an armoured body exterior.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> an animal MUCH small than an Onos (IE: sits in the palm of your hand) has armor on it.

wait what? lol im kidding but it is set 5 years later, the game is called natural selection which is about evolution, i think.
self explanatory almost, generally onos get thier arses kicked by a few hmgs so the its evolved a metal, bony substance infront of it to defend its front, but if it was on the back it may hinder movement abit.
UWE should build up a lore section for game content. Maybe closer to launch (or when alpha / beta is happening) just have someone spend 30 minutes aside once a week to throw in some lore content for things. People do like that and it's a way to say "because UWE made it so, and it's in the lore!" :)

--- I noticed there was an animation shown in the video for the Onos 'roaring'. I'm hoping the suggestion of moving Primal Scream to the Onos (see the 'Onos' thread) has been taken on board. It doesn't make sense to make such an intricate animation just for the teaser movie (which I think uses this 'roar' anim too).
So my money's on a 'roar' ability for the Onos. I'm hoping a Primal equivalent so that the Onos can lead the charge and inspire fear like it should do.

Personally, I'm keen to have a go at making textures/art work for NS2. Practicing my Speed Painting skills any chance I get.
I am digging the new look. The one thing that always bugged me about the onos in the first game was I never could see the connection between it and the rest of the alien evolutions. I mean sure there were some characteristics, but being based off evolution to a degree, the onos and the skulk looked like totally different species. Here I can clearly see the relation with the skulk or the gorge even. Totally maximum tomato.

From what I understand, NS canon says that most of the lifeforms aren't evolutionarily linked, they were separate species that were 'overtaken' by the bacteria. The bacterium then mutated them to becoming fighting machines and adapted them to the environment (skulks have claw feet for wall walking, boney plates on the onos, the fades acid launcher etc.). You could probably say the gorge, lerk and skulk are more or less related, but the fade and onos are totally differnt species altogether.
But I do like the primate look of the onos, makes it seem more of a powerful hitter than an unstoppable tank (a role it never really fit into).

Yes, the Khara do artifical selection (breeding) or directed mutations on their own lifeforms. Natural selection refers to the battle between humans and aliens. The goal is to survive the other and propagate.
What Mr. Charisma said reminded me how big similarities there are between Khara and the Zerg from Starcraft. :P
Is that one real or just another screwed up bit of information from IGN? Sure i haven't played NS2 yet but tbh if stomp only disables buildings it feels kinda underwhelming...
Sure you could take out phasegates easily and a TF but besides that? I don't see any real use.. if the whole "disable building" thing is just additional to the marine stunning than it sounds okay (maybe a little bit too strong but who knows).

Nice video, even if it's on the short side of things. Glad to see Devour is gone, thank god. Stomp/Devour combo was one of the worst additions to the game.
That IGN article is written very poorly however, Quite a few bits of misinformation and spelling mistakes. It was nice when Journalism required you to actually check your facts before doing a write up.
edit: Guess I'm not the only one that noticed. Someone should get this Jason dude to rewrite most of that article, it's terrible.

Hm, only 3 abilities listed. One per hive? Or two, if they all have secondary fires.
It looks like it might actually take some skill to onos now with those weak flanks. =D
Looking forward to more of these videos - but I, and I'm sure lots of people, would like a game play trailer of some kind.
