768k upload will not go above 500k , HELP !
has anyone had this problem before. My isp swears they are giving me 2mb/768k upload but it's never gone beyond 500k on the upload. They said my neighborhood is only using 25% of the available bandwith during peak hours (they just upgraded our area)
I think when my modem boots it's pulling a config file that RR believes is 2mb/768k but I think they are wrong. they've check the settings, signal/noise rf etc.. time after time and they keep saying "it's set right"
I asked the IT manager last night to set me up temporarily with a larger .bin config file 4mb/2mb just to see if that helps my upload and he said "I refuse to do that" OMG and wouldn't give me an explanation why he wouldn't WTF ??

b) they know the cap is wrong and are knowingly cheating business class customers out of the upload they are supposed to be getting

I know what he's talking about, RR is a pain when u hit Tech support and IT, they don't know wtf they are talking about ever. And they never email u when they are doing maintence. gggrrr
the rr tech manager said these tests are invalid becuase they aren't on their network. I said fine, I'll host a file on my plane jane IIS webserver with a new ip (so nobody can download from it but him) and let him pull from a shared folder. He picked out a large file and began the download. I watched my speeds on this end rocket to 500k and stay there for the remainder of the upload test. The IT manager on the other end said yeah it's fine see I'm getting 900k, 800k, 700k, see it's fine. I said "are you kidding me ? let me explain this to you. When downloading with IE it always starts by reporting some rediculously high speed and eventually settles down to the actual speed" He said "yeah that's how IE works" as if he was teaching me something.. wtf ??!! Then he said he's seeing the 500k that i'm seeing after about 15 seconds.
he checked the bandwith in the area and said we're only using 25% of what's available in my city so there is no bandiwth problem. A tech was out at my place this morning with a modem checking speeds outside at my lock box. if the speeds are right it's something with the inside wiring and if the speeds are bad it's something with the line outside and he'll keep going backwards until he finds the spot that it's f'n up.
Also, are you familiar with MRTG? You could set that up to graph your bandwidth. See if you get better downloads/uploads during non-peak hours. If so, they're lieing and they're having network issues. If not, do you have any friends in the area you can test this from? See if this happens to everyone in the area.

I have the newest firmware and mine doesnt drop players. I think your isp is cheating you, so do some legal work and be a true american!
But really, you might want to investigate this, if your paying alot of money and getting 65% of what you pay for is a real rip off. It seems a little drastic but dunno its just a thought
I've done upload tests all all times of the day 1am 4am 6am 7am and it just doesn't make a difference. I really think the .bin config file for the modem is wrong. Isn't it strange that they "refuse" to try a different .bin file that allows more upload just to see if it helps and without explanation ? that bothers me

basically in my email I chronicaled the RR business class upgrade experience and the hell it put me through. In it I also stated that the previous IT manager "fred" has no sense of urgency and refuses to upgrade the .bin file for testing purposes. He asked me to send him screenshots verifying the slow upload and it took him 6 f'n days to call me back about them and only after I raised holy hell with my account rep Karla.

He isn't sure what's going wrong just yet but he's going to track it down. He said my download speeds with the roadrunner test site showed for him 700k to 1300k he said he could go elsewhere with his modem and get 2000 to 2300 all day long so even my download isn't just right. I told him that my download speedd have always been horrible on the roadrunner test site but they always show good 1600-1800 on speed test outside the roadrunner network. It's beginning to sound like the problem is in the local roadrunner area ... so when I test outside the area I'm bypassing the problem and getting better speeds. However, my upload speed is the same regardless of the location so far
finally a tech that isn't blaming the problems on my computers, router etc..

James the tech called. He asked if my speed improved last night. I told him that I tested this morning and it was nearly twice the speed ! He said he that he found the speed issue on one port of a router that supplied bandwidth to hernando, desoto counties etc.. he said it's affecting about 150 people. He has us switched with another port so those people have slow speeds and we have their fast speeds.
He said he cannot leave it like this and will have to switch it back. Then he'll get some other techs from the winchester branch to swap out the router. This probably will not happen today.
I asked him if the change back to the old slow port would be immediately or not. He said probably today. I asked if it could wait until after the weekend possibly because that's when I need the speed the most. He said I know you've been waiting forever for the speed so I'll leave it alone unless I'm told to switch it. He said the router swap will probably have to be done around midnight on whatever day they can get to it since it'll take all of those connections down.
my upload went from 500k max to 1100k max on a large download from my webster where it previously averaged 480k it's now 860k

does that have anything to do with your problem? am i not getting the full download capabilities that i'm paying for or is DSL different?
also...my ping is horrible for what i am paying. ($50/month) I ping 70 average to Gamedaemon.net CS servers in Chicago. And 100 to texas. and 120-160 to servers on either coast. I would think with 512k dsl I should be pinging a little better than that....
btw I live in Barron, Wisconsin....close to Minneapolis/St. Paul MN (which reminds me...I live 1.5 hours from those cities and I ping about 140 to servers near there.

It does seem that your download speeds are just a bit low for the package your buying. Perhaps it would be worth a call to your ISP for an explanation at least.
DSL is a completely differnt technology .. distance from the telco, line condition etc.. all play a big part in it's performance.

But ffs I want better ping. I'm tired of being limited to only a few servers in each game, because I ping too high.

i don't think i'll get much help from my ISP. At least I am guessing. They are a small local company that only gives service to like 3-4 counties. When I went to sign up for DSL the lady said it would be about a week for someone to come over and put the modem in. When I asked to just have the modem and do it myself so I could get it up that day or the next (however long it would take them to "flip the switch") she said no. ffs all the guy did was show up...put the modem on the shelf...plug it in and leave. I COULD HAVE DONE THAT! #@$%GDDF
oh not to mention when I went in one day to find info on their DSL (before i purchesed it) I asked the lady if I could use my own modem (cause I figured them being a small company they would have **obscenity** ones) and she didn't even know what a DSL modem was.
On another note, should I have gone with Charter cable...that was my other option. But I've heard so many people talk about bad connections at peak times. And I thought being in a small populated area that their equipment wouldn't be all that great. Further adding to bad connection. But....would they have been better? (i.e. lower ping, and much higher dl speeds.)

One thing I can credit to them is, when I first got the dsl I would get like 200-300 ping and MAJOR packet loss during peak times (usually 4-11pm). I bitched and about a week later it was stable at all times of the day. So they must have done something somewhere.
My brother worked for Charter in Jackson TN so he tried DSL and Cable both. DSL was more stable with little to no fluctuations in speed but the cable pinged better so he stayed with that since he a big gamer and wasn't hosting.
anyone that says DSL is better than Cable or Cable is better than DSL would be foolish. There are way too many variables involved to make that general assumption.
The best advice I can offer to anyone is try it all, and see what works best for YOU
at first they played the blame game saying it was my equipment. In the end 3 entire counties were upgraded due to my efforts. *pats self on the back* because I'll bet you 99% them had no idea they weren't getting what they were paying for.

yeah i'll definitely do some more testing later. Only problem is I don't know much in this area. I could use dslreports.com, but it sounds like to me that you've done more testing than that. I'm afraid I wouldn't be much help in convincing my isp something was wrong.

now I have the business class plan for 80.00 a month
it's rated at 2mb/768k but acts like 2.5mb/1000k
I live in Silicon Valley, and the internet here is sh*t.
I cannot belive it. The only cable provider is AT&T and they dont offer where i live. SBC offers dsl, but the dont offer uploads over 370 or somthing, and thats 200 a month. I, at the moment, have Fixed Wireless which is 3mb down/128 up.
A Good Connection is the <b>key</b> to everything.
