Why I Hate Natural Selection

Not what you think...
Well, it was released on October the 31st. With some l33t wget trickery and my 31kbps dialup connection, I was playing it on the evening on the 1st November.

So, what do I think about this mod?

It's BRILLIANT!

And why do I hate it so?

Sleep deprivation. I've got shadows under my eyes, I keep hearing skulks chuckling behind furniture, and I've got an imaginary HUD surrounding everything I see. Status messages indicate I'm doing fairly well regarding frags, but it's not entirely a useful addition to everyday life.

Well, congratulations on Natural Selection - it's great. The music, the graphics, the sounds, the maps, the models, the visuals, the theme, the manual and most importantly the gameplay - they all rock. Nice job.

I'm already planning ns_minotaur in my head, and falling behind on NightWatch commitments...

Mostly due to the fact that most gamers are used to playing several rounds in a sitting, and a single round in NS can last up to 5 hours

(Yeah, I played a 5 hour game the other night)

    It's horrible!

I would only sleep after 4am or not sleep at all for homework/project reasons only, but now there's one more reason named NS!

My god playing NS is like flushing your time down the toilet excpet it does it in such a wonderful way that you get tired but you probably wouldn't realize you're tired until you shut down halflife (or NS)

I've nearly lost my beloved girlfriend because once the game released I barely pay any attention to her...

Talk about addiction, oh my god.

OMG, we almost have a support group here. And I thought I had trouble sleeping...and yes, I keep hearing Onos screaming outside my doorway...like when I'm a commander in a game gone bad "ie: the Marines jumped ship"

    *sparse applause*
I've been following NS since April and even then I tried to keep tabs on it every day. Sleep is a thing of the past. Thinking up stuff to do in NS seems important and precious to me. Even while doing projects and homework I'll replay really fun moments in my head. I'm about as addicted to NS as any holder of the "one ring of power" in The Lord of The Rings.

Let me suggest how a normal game would go...

1.) the skulk/marine rushing, if not successful, will probably takes about 15 mins of the game time
2.) the resouces node hunts will take about 20-45 minutes or so. (sometimes this is skipped)
3.) the addictional hive securing (for both team) will probably take about 15-45 minutes depending on rebellion force.
4.) the research/hive build takes about 15-30 minutes
5.) the struggle for the last hive (if not taken/secure yet) will probably last about 30-45 minutes
6.) the final showdown (you all know what it means) takes about 30-45 minutes, depending which team you're on and how many people are still remaining at this time

The normal game seems to range from about 125 minutes which is 2 hours 5 minutes, to 3 hours and 45 minutes. This is a fair prediction... and usually there are more to that, like the aliens try to take back the hives, rebuild, and stuff... that takes about another 45 minutes.... and perhaps if the marine's last base IS the hive, that makes it twice as hard to finish up, which takes another extra 30 minutes or so...

so you would be lucky/unlucky to have a rush successful by either the Kharaa or the TSA.

or else another 2-4 hours of your life is spent in a round of the game called NS... again!
  • SLip1SLip1 Join Date: 2002-11-05 Member: 7093Members
Yeah, this game is rather time consuming. Playing other games, and playing a few rounds doesn't take nearly as long as it does for NS. So you're sitting playing NS going, yeah, I'll get a few rounds in. At that time it's been like 4 or more hours already, lol.

The same thing has been happening to me, strangely enough. Only I was sober. Just tired. And every time I closed my eyes, in the top, right-hand corner of my eyelids, was written, H'BNayr, and then toothy jaws, or a slash, or a spike shooter, or an acid rocket, and then a name. I never could make out that other name, but then, it didn't really matter.

Then the realization I'm hallucinating about a game would snap me to again, and I wouldn't be able to sleep at all.

So I just got in one more round.

    -Ryan!

that's one thing, the game lengths... unless the rush works in takes a couple hours... while in the PTs two hours was about as long as they ever got... Most were done between 5 and 65 minutes...

Hi, my name is Kiz, and I'm addicted to Natural Selection.

Once, after being up for ~30 hours, I was constantly hearing the marine build noise. It came from cars, power lines, televisions, escalators, an X-Box, some homeless dude at the bus stop, and a deep fat fryer. Every time I turned a corner, I thought I was gonna be wasted by a turret. I was constantly looking for air vents to crawl into. I even wondered why my hive sight wasn't working.

    Help me.

    2 to 4 hours ?

I played a game once that lasted 5 minutes ( all the marines abandoned the base before even a spawn portal was build)
The longest game was about 6 hours and 15 minutes ( no comander, no gorge and a hellovalot noobs )

What I'm going to say may freak some of you out, but this >incredible< mod is capturing large numbers of players in their late-20s to mid-30s as well as those of you who are still students.

All three of the on-line gaming groups to which I belong (CoFR CGA GGi) are almost exclusively comprised of over 25s. All three have seen a large number of people move away from CS and >gasp< even DoD since this mod was officially released.

For my own part, I'm in my mid-30's, work as an IT professional and have all of the accoutrements that come with that age - house, job, mortgage, wife, kids, disposable income (Oh that's a laugh! ) - and like you I STILL find myself going "OMFGZ it's 3:30am I have to get up in the morning"

Congratulations to the NS team for producing a mod which appeals to a *broad* age-spectrum. A job well done. You've worked bloody hard on this and it shows.

    /me stands up and applauds.

I've had that same **obscenity** happend to me when I play games sometimes. For instance, when I first played Stone Keep, I couldnt sleep 'cause every time I closed my eyes, it looked like I was walking down one of those stone halls looking at a vast ammount of ants and throgs. I hear skulk chuckles everytime Im trying to sleep and imagine seeing bile/acid bombs bashing enemy/friendly turrets.
