Don't call smgs "lmgs" in ns2

In ns1... our "lmg" was a smg and our "hmg" was a lmg... can we like square this away right now...

<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Submachine_gun" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Submachine_gun</a>

<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_machine_gun" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_machine_gun</a>

<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_machine_gun" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_machine_gun</a>

this will clear it up i think... seriously this misnaming should of never occurred in ns1... we mind as well call the pistol a sniper rifle because of how it has 100% accuracy at infinite range!
<img src="http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k69/watertiger/picard-palm-faceL-6-192570-13.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

My humble request for ns2 hmg (it shows how marines learned to combine the effectiveness of the ns1 lmg (lmg as in the 250 round gun) with the grenade launcher:
<img src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/2e/XM307-01.jpg/749px-XM307-01.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Shouldnt the devs be showing off concept art for ns2's new carbine instead of smg... wait that's a carbine but their calling it a lmg but ns1 lmg are smg... wtf is going... omg it's starting again!

    No i'm quite serious. It was almost as if... because marines had "lmg" as their default weapon... that somehow that made them more powerful sounding. Sort of like to avoid flak from the community saying how IRL why would an army be armed with smgs... no ofcourse not... those are lmgs...

    Ahhh... semantics...
    I'm sure there are a lot more "errors" in NS naming... but oh well. It's fiction.

    Relax buddy, it's just a game in space with some aliens. Does it really concern you that much that the guns aren't set correctly to real world classifications?

    I don't think the naming of the weapons matters NEARLY as much as the fact in the game you can evolve from a 50 pound dog, into an 800 pound onos in less then a minute.

    i actually prefer the names as they are in ns. they are comfortable. if you go changing them around, then you aren't adding anything at all, and you're only taking away some of the nostalgia from ns.

    and also:

    you don't know what kind of guns they technically were in ns1. all you know is that the hmg was big, and the lmg was not as big. the lmg could've easily been an assault rifle, and therefor not an smg. in fact it looks more like an assault rifle than an smg, so smg wouldn't really fit. but it wouldn't really fit to call it an AR, because AR sounds bigger than the default weapon. lmg fights fine, it's a machine gun that is light. if you have a machine gun that is light, the larger counterpart should probably be a machine gun that is heavy. lmg -> hmg.

    The truth is that this is the future... where the hmgs of today are the lmgs of NS and so forth. plus, i wouldn't see why you would lose sleep over this.

    end;
    }

    I think it's funny that so far in the future marines are still wandering around with projectile based weapons that look and sound amazingly like their 20th century counterparts ;)

    What about a laser? hitscan, does constant dmg (with a gradually decreasing/increasing ramp), overheats after certain amount of continuous use. Not actually suggesting this but it sure would be less anachronistic.

    If it's not broke don't fix it.

    This is a case of it not being broken, so we don't need to 'fix' it.

    In fact, I'm glad NS is one of the very few sci-fi games that stick with projectile-only personnel weapons - it's far more realistic, to me.

    No it's like this:

    Onos = elephant or rhino
    Gorge = pig or fatty
    Lerk = Zubat (pokemon)
    Skulk = ... Rat (well i replaced my skulk model with yellow+black starship trooper spiders)

    Obviously someone should release a dinosaur replacement mod for ns:
    Onos = Triceratops
    Gorge = Animantarx
    Lerk = Pterodactyl
    Skulk = Dilophosaurus (we will assume they spit like in the jurassic park movie... their parasite feature accounted for)
    Fade = Velociraptor (i almost forgot about this annoying alien archetype)... so it'll be a bigger version of the skulk with large leaping... all fits in

    Naturally all of these should be different really bright colors with really interesting patterns...

    Meet the skulk <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Spitting.dinosaur.arp.750pix.jpg" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Spitting....arp.750pix.jpg</a>

    There it's established that the aliens are reptiles... particularly the descendants or genetic remixes of dinosaur dna.

    That established culture is about to be replaced by a new established culture that has never ever played NS1. At the very least we should add another weapon to the game to fill the smg role so as to somehow express the differences between a smg and lmg in the ns2 universe which are very striking in reallife. Smg in reallife... a small gun... essentially a long barreled pistol which fires pistol bullets. More powerful then a pistol... less powerful then everything else. (in ns1 the pistol was more powerful then the lmg and more accurate then the lmg...)

    I see that as the middle ground to take on this issue... add an additional weapon to ns2 and call it a smg... give it a 50 round magazine like a p90 or 30 like the outdated mp5 or 25 like the ump45.

    Create a lmg that has 250 rounds of ammo, belt fed. Create a HMG that is the same as the lmg with only 100 rounds of more deadly ammo.

    Their and if people want to continue calling smgs as lmgs then they can just edit the lua files for the interface... crisis averted! Now we dont need to be locked down with the assumption that we are all worthless until we get hmgs... we start with weapons that are capable of killing fades in 1 on 1... that is the path to a game that new players can enjoy just as much as experienced players.

    What many people imagine to be realistic in 2009 will change with time; imagined impossibilities become possibilities as time passes and discoveries are made.

    See to me that sounds like the path to a highly frustrating game. Granted NS2 is likely to change the role of Fades somewhat, but making newly spawned marines competitive with the single best alien tool for marine-killing seems like bad balance.

    Marine weapons are projectile based, cause the have nanites as payload.

    The bullet penetrates the khaara skin releasing the nanites and then the nanites "fight" the bacteria inside the khaara causing internal bleeding and general dissolving und such.

    Of course, the bacteria overcome the nanites overtime, healing the alien body unless a deadly dose of nanite payload was delivered to the target.

    Shall I make something up for the GL as well ???

    I like that concept for something like 'poison' damage-over-time ammo (reminding me of the ammo type suggestion thread), but I think the actual marine bullets, nanite-injecting or otherwise, do their damage practically instantaneously.

    Toxin dart secondary fire? See an alien nearly escaping around a corner and right-click to lauch the damage-over-time round at it. Digression suppression activated!

    We really don't need to round up all discrepancies in the game, I mean why has the weaponry bothered you, but not these:

    -Commanders don't lead small squads. (I think Sergeants do?)
    -Marines don't have a commander rank.
    -LMG's, HMG's, Shotguns, and GL's use the same ammo. (nanites, I know.)
    -Do all marines have training with all types of weaponry? I doubt that a welder-using guy (Sapper?) would be proficient with an HMG.
