NS2 Marine painting

<div class="IPBDescription">I have done an art!</div>Like most of the folks on the forum, the new NS2 trailer's gotten me pretty amped up for the new game. And in order to deal with the nerves, I decided to do a painting!

<img src="http://www.m-stock.org/wip8.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

It's not finished by any stretch of the imagination so please feel free to point anything out that looks strange, or pieces that I may have incorrectly gleaned from Cory's concept.

    Looking hot though!

Also, the neck part looks kind of weird.

nice work, looking good. I would suggest taking the helmet off and adding hair just to make it look nicer and more human. Maybe make her hold the helmet in her hand in stead of smoking?

I think it looks damn good.

    Leave the helmet on though.

They have recently stated they redid the marine model but have yet to release any shots of it. So if you want to take an artistic hand to the design, I don't think it's a big problem <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Also looking very cool. I agree to leave the helmet on.

The neck/arms (black parts) are very dull and flat, no texture at all. Her eyes look demonic, as in a red hue. Keep the helmet. The chest light needs to be formed onto/protruding from the armor. Res looks good, as far as I can tell.

Yes I know I was critical, but this could turn into some REALLY good fan art.

Thanks guys. Like I said, it's not done yet so issues like light reflecting upon specific surfaces will be sorted out when everything is basically done. As of this moment the arm holding the paper as well as the chinstrap have been neglected outright since I first sketched it. Other areas like the helmet and face are only 50%. So expect to see things shape up here as I finish it off more.

I've been debating putting some glowing skulk eyes in the background like she's about to get jumped. Thoughts?

very good work, looks like a beatiful girl and thats not very easy to draw, so nice face.
    Nice mien, love it.
    To bad we can't see her hair <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />
Maybe you paint some picture with her helm in the hand.

Sorry about my english.... thats annoying.

She should have a hallway behind her. Looks good so far though!

Her Armor doesn't have Edges, everything looks rounded and quite flat, even Areas where the Shadows should draw very sharp.

Also, the Blaze looks weird, but I can't put my Finger on it why.

Oh please, just realize it's a work in progress.
It's a rough concept for it, and that's why he went here to get feedback before he gets too much detail and work into it, it looks like that simply because he's getting the shape and anatomy right for her.

Anyway, to give OP some feedback; looks really good in many ways, but just curious why she is holding a paper to light it with? What's the story behind it?
Also I'm personally for showing her hair, if she's out taking a cigarette I believe she'd use the new helmet that is quite easy to retract and get a breather and just chill out for a moment. And imo it would make it more personal, more like a human.

Should she have been in battle the moment before I believe her armour would have scratches and probably stains, if you want to add a little bit of flavour.

Keep up the good work ^^

Needs more detail(s), especially the face. I like the hallway and glowing skulk eyes idea. Just make sure the perspective looks right, because you've got a pretty high straight-on shot (portrait), skulk on the wall then? I'm honestly surprised to see this level of quality coming from this forum; I know that sounds bad, but I'm not claiming to be able to do better than stick figures, myself. I assume this was digitally painted <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
Oh, and to completely disagree with what someone else said: Keep her smoking. Possibly make her smoking hot.

I am impressed, looks very good so far. My only comment is that I get the feeling her neck is slightly too long, but I'm not sure exactly why.

The distance from chin to the shoulderpads looks fairly normal, so maybe its the impression that the neck guard sinks into the shoulder armor a fair distance, suggesting her actual shoulders are an inch or so below the shoulderpads. That might throw off the chin-to-shoulder gap. I could be wrong though.

    last man standing:

big battle - her squad is already dead - last man standing - lights gone off - knows what's coming - lights her cigarette with a burning paper.

    - add glowing alien eyes in the dark,or a barely seeable skul on the upper right (make the pic bigger)

    - for fun, you good add an F4 on the paper! small but seeable some where in the text...

    rambo like:

add some dead alien - onos? in the background?...

Hey Exo, that painting is looking really nice so far. I like the mood of it quite a bit.

The marine armor has changed a fair amount from the original concept, and I'm sorry we haven't released the new concept art yet (look for it in a few weeks). But I wouldn't worry about it, this painting will still look great.

If we are going to continue to get artwork at this level of quality from the community we should maybe add some sort of fan art section to the website. Looking forward to seeing the finished piece.

    - Hmm I don't like the size of the image
    - hmm I don't like the backround color... Hmm.
    - I don't like the fact that I can't zoom in and see exactly what is written on the paper, poor detail.. tsk tsk.
    - Oh, the cigarette looks a little too long for me, I think you should scrap it and start again.

Hmm and most of all I don't like the fact that I'm another worthless forum lurker who cannot produce work of a standard anywhere close to that, so instead of just giving you some constructive comments, I'm going to do what people have done to me my entire life and complain.

    LMFAO, I'm kidding. It's awesome, I like it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

I would put them behind a vent. That way she's in ever present danger, but not being caught unaware necessarily.

What are you planning on doing with it? Sell, auction, gift to devs, keep it to treasure its awesomeness forever and ever?

Maybe slightly larger mammaries <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />. The damage and stains sound like a good idea. It might look cool if she were lighting the cigarette with a red hot barrel. Would love to see the next iteration, and some more of this top quality fan art in general. Keep up the good work!

Great work but the background needs to translate the foreground.
Example: A marine with a flame thrower torching a office covered in infestation hence why she is lighting a ciggie from a scrap of paper and not some futuristic lighter.

I think it's great, and I agree with others who say that the helmet is a good thing. Sorry for the generic praise post that lacks useful criticism, but I don't have time to look at it in detail at work. I'd love to see more of your pieces.

You know, they actually sell those. I think they market them as easier ways to cut your Thanksgiving Turkey, so I'm not sure what exactly you're supposed to do with them the rest of the year. =)
