About the friends system (twitter post)

Just thought I'd start a new topic to get some more input, charlie asked about which friends system we would prefer.

Personally I'd say go with steam friends, since all of the old ns players have steam already, and I think it's at the moment it's the widest spread friend system (xfire will work anyway).

either that or your own system, but I really don't want to install yet another contact list (running msn, steam friends, xfire and voicecomm clients is enough thank you...)

and screw facebook, I prefer to keep my gaming and personal life separate (not that I use facebook other than to stop people from sending requests)

Though i'd like the option between some in-game friends list [or something] and steam. Steam DEFINATELY is reliable, and I recommend steam just for their friends list, its quite easy to use.

    an update here :

RE Player accounts: we'll definitely be providing full Steam integration but need something else for the standalone version

    other than steam, I think your own NS2 fd list would be a good idea <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

please don't use facebook, I don't want to get wierd people that I don't even know sending me friend request :S ...

What about twitter? You could hook up /bug to report to it too ...

facebook!?! You guys nuts? Keep it simple- if the player uses steam, then use the steam friends... if this is the standalone, use a local friends list.... Now the question is how are you logging friends.... whats the unique identifier, steam id?

To be honest I'm starting to regret buying the stand-alone version. Having all the steam things into it would be so much simpler. Unlimited re-install and everything. So I don't know...custom friend list if you need to... I'm also worried about losing my key...So a system like steam with users and everything would be great but stupid since steam already exists. I know they're probably taking a small part of the profits but... Anyways you probably already know all that so do something amazing as usual.

    Thanks

I'm not worried at all. NS1 was kind of a big deal, even to the people at valve. If they see that NS2 fans are antsy about it, I'm sure that Valve and UWE will work something out where we'll be able to activate our standalones over steam.

You can always put the installer on a cd for yourself i think. So i doubt that it would be much of a problem.

If it is possible to refund my stand alone pre-order for a steam integrated version, without losing the deluxe edition perks, then I'd do it in a heartbeat.

The pre ordered version will use Steam for friends, servers, etc. The *only* difference is that you will be downloading it from the UWE servers and not the steam servers.

so this is pretty much how ns1 worked...you download it somewhere and "add" it to steam. I don't think that the 2 versions will differ - both will use steam, its just if you originally downloaded it 'from' steam or elsewhere

Hopefully they will be reliable by then ^_^.

Anyway, back to the topic. I think Steam friends should be enough at first, I don't really see a need for any further integration.

Comprox will it auto update via steam or through a 3rd party software if we bought from naturalselection2.com?

Currently, it will update via their own updater software and not steam. This may change in the future, but appears to be up to Valve and will not be decided for a bit.

If you buy it off steam whenever it becomes available there, it will work like any other steam game for updates.

Seems like theyve come a long way since 03. Anyone remember the months where Friends Network is currently offline was like your motd?

I remember the days when steam was hated on by all and we clutched at our beloved WON

I guess a working steam and a steam account will be among the requirements to play the game?
A bit worried about it because i can't run steam due to my ISP.

    On topic:
I generally end up playing in certain servers with known people over time anyways so a favorite servers list would be enough for me in game.

Hopefully the game will also support joining the game through plug-ins through browser (and IRC clients) ip:port/pass format.
