Voice Chat and Feedback

StreptoStrepto Join Date: 2005-01-07 Member: 33571Members
I'm a bit excited about the fact that we might be able to host our own servers during the alpha and/or beta, and I for one would love to keep one up.
And since we're all going to be chasing bugs together and socializing in-game, I was thinking about voice chat. Would be easier to work together to reproduce bugs and talk about game balance, and thus form a collective opinion on what feedback to leave UWE.

I don't know if there will be voice chat in-game, but I'm assuming UWE aren't focusing on putting stuff like that in atm. But if it's in already then it's cool.
But if there won't be any in-game voice chat, I was wondering if there was some way of controlling voice chat software like Ventrilo or Teamspeak through LUA. Would be especially cool if you could switch rooms automatically on Vent/TS when you join a team or go to RR.

Feel free to discuss anything regarding voice chat.

When they do put voice chat in there should be 2 buttons for it.

Voice chat for team Button (alt-key)
    Voice chat for Everyone(alltalk) (ctrl-key)

That way you can lay down the smack talk without having to have "alltalk 1"

I don't know why you get the idea that it wouldn't be in the game. It is pretty much NECESSARY to communicate with the commander, and voice chat was always in NS1. Why they wouldn't include it is beyond me.

im positive they'll have voice chat, it wouldn't fit if they didn't include it. As for the suggestion of 2 voice chat keys, its a good idea, but there' s always people that would abuse it, and it would be a little confusing, so i would say that they would stick with single team voice chat, as well as the ingame type chat.

I've not seen any evidence of people abusing alltalk any more than they'd abuse team-only voice chat or text chat. The only abuse I can think of is spamming, and any communication channel can be spammed. It solves more problems than it causes.

Perhaps an sv_alltalk style variable would control whether or not the alltalk button works, and it defaults to on. Some servers might not like it, I guess, but for most it'd be a great addition. The teamtalk button could be kept on all the time.

Reading through the NS2 suggestions forum I came across two threads witch ideas that sounded kinda cool.

    1. Player voice over "at character"
    2. Communication becomes increasingly garbled with distance

The first one basically means that you here voice chat as if the player was speaking, so if you're far away you won't hear it as much. The second one is more general, and is a nice touch in my opinion.

So what I'd love to see is this:

    - Team voice chat plays as if it was from the character
    - Team voice chat also plays as if heard through radio (which means you hear your teammates even tho they're far away)
    - Voice chat becomes garbled as you go further away from each other (to a certain point ofc. mostly just esthetic)

    Martini made me digress...

Basically, what we need to know is if there will be in-game voice chat <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Edit: Also if audio playback can be handled by LUA somehow, or be otherwise moddable.

    I love this idea.

Would add a lot more atmosphere to voice communication.

In the distant future the radios will only work when you are in close proximity to each other?
    No commander conversation?
Seems a bit silly that we can colonize space, build futuristic weapons pretty much out of thin air, but our radios are no better than your average baby monitor...

It could work in two different ways imo:

Voice chat is played back both as a voice from the player that speaks, but also through your headset.

    1. At a a great enough distance your communications no longer work.
    2. Voice chat works regardless of range, but some static is heard just to give a little more immersion.

Option 1 would impact gameplay by making it undesirable to move out of radio range of your team mates, i.e. no rambo style moves. I don't want it to work like this, I loved sneaking in a PG at a hive <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
Would be nice to have this kind of feature for a tactical mod tho. Would be a very nice touch when people whisper on voice chat when sneaking up on someone <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />
Option 2 wouldn't impact gameplay much, but could work to give a little more immersion to the players.

Besides, radiowaves are greatly absorbed and reflected by obstacles, especially metallic obstacles (Faraday's Cage anyone?). Just a matter of what frequency and output power you have. Regardless of the physics behind it I think that players would be able to appreciate some sort of feature like the ones above.

I've also been thinking about how playback would work if you're listening to the enemy team, no good ideas yet tho.

Being able to talk to just the people near you would be so nice for "LOOK OUT!", "BEHIND YOU!", etc. I always love it when someone says that and a player on other side of map presses up against the wall afraid.

Agreed! that would make such a significant difference. I really hope they implemented that in NS2.

And I wouldn't end up muting so many players that constantly talk to each other... "Help me build the RT" "Watch my back" "Follow me"... I don't need to hear that if that was referred to me!! and it simply ruins the game by adding more noise and prevents me from hearing aliens/marines coming and commander talking.

This idea is genius! and a must for NS2. (since communication is a HUUUUUUUGE part of NS and it has to be adjusted to work properly)
