Steam ripped me off

<div class="IPBDescription">:(</div>There is/was a deal on steam whereby you could get BG&E, IL2: 1946, Far Cry 1 and Dark Messiah for $10. I already own BG&E and IL2 so I figured I'd get them as extra copies I could gift to someone else. Turns out that extra copies thing only applies to HL2 and Episode 1.

Keep that in mind when using steam ladies.

Auch, I had no idea it was half-life exclusive with gifts, unless specifically bought as such.

    Thanks for the heads up.

No, it's a "enter the IP of the server" kinda arrangement. Works pretty damn well though.

Wow, that's a surprise. I also would've thought you'd get to give them as gifts.

I bought that Ubisoft pack, too. Once again a great deal on Steam. I've heard good things about Beyond Good and Evil and now I finally get to try it :>

I think Gabe Newell has an account on here. Send him a PM!

You can get a program called <a href="http://hyperfighter.sk/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=getit&lid=9" target="_blank">Hyperlobby</a> that lets you browse through IL2 servers, a lot better than typing in the IP ingame.

I'm not surprised in the slightest. It's down to how clever the company is and the situation.

Valve realised that they were releasing the 2nd episode of a sequel series to a game many people wouldn't have played on console. So they bundled all of it into the OB to boost that discs sales rather than assuming or lazily/greedily relying on people wanting to buy HL2 and Ep1 as well as buying Ep2.

Valve then did the same on PC, but because of Steam and a lot of vocal annoyance at existing HL fans who were paying for what they already had, they were able to cleverly allow gifting to get more players into the whole HL2 saga. It's basically the biggest game demo ever: you get the previous two games for free to see if you like it. Turns out a lot of people did.

The games you listed have no real correspondance to eachother in terms of lineage, so there's no commercial sense in offering one for free as an incentive to sell other games. If you give away any of those for free, you're just giving it away for free. You're not going to get anyone to buy Dark Messiah of Might and Magic because they got gifted a free copy of Far Cry 2.

If it's any consolation I totally knew that you could only gift HL2/Ep1.

Keep in mind that these aren't Valve games; they're ubisoft. I wouldn't expect the service outside of Valve; that said, I don't know if any of Valve's other titles have gifting options (if tycho's right then I guess not :p ).

But regardless of all that, Dark Messiah is pretty sweet. Singleplayer, at least.

That's weird, when I pre-ordered GTA IV on Steam (don't laugh, I don't own a current-gen console) they gave me a copy of Vice City for free. But since I already had the "Everything from Rockstar" pack, it let me give the new copy of VC to Chimp.

Am I reading your post correct in that you already had BG&E and IL2 on your Steam Account when you bought the bundle?

Yep. Bought, downloaded and installed entirely with steam.

    out of curiosity:

Have you tried contacting steam support?

I decided against getting the Ubi pack for MoM and IL, cause I already had farcry and BG&E. If I could share the other 2 games I would have gotten the pack in 2 seconds.

Valve needs to get some other companies on board with the game share thing with packs, it really really increases the value of the packages for people who pick and choose games based on reputation and rank. The hook games that are supposed to be giving the pack value are actually what is devaluating it.

Steam ripped me off once, vac use to be really loose on its policies and <a href="http://madabouthats.org/projects/cgshader" target="_blank">this</a> worked for about 2 years till one day i log on and i got banned, made me furious that they don't even audit vac bans :/

I was more mad about the loss of the nice 5 digit steam id over the games tbh <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
