Tell me about SSDs

solid-state laptop drives
So just recently I bought a m1400 tablet PC off ebay for in-class note-taking and such. However, it came with an ancient 20gb 4200 rpm harddrive and I want to upgrade. I was looking around newegg and found this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820208445
Does anybody have experience with SSDs and laptops? What kind of speed improvement might I see? It's only 32gb but I have a big external drive if I need real storage.

edit: also the pointer seems to lag a few fractions of a second behind where my stylus actually is, is this common? It isn't an issue but I do notice it.

    SSDs are pretty snazzy.

I'm not running any right now but the big issues you are going to run into is the failure rate and write speed.

Just keep in mind that with older laptops you will run into failure issues on hardware, so be careful and utilize the cloud so take notes in google docs etc. If you follow good practice and backup your stuff, it should do fine for note taking in class.

speed should be around peak for the old drive which is to say you should see an increase though on write you will notice less benefit but for something like taking notes in class it should be more than adequate.

I have read differing results on the whole does it increase battery life question so on that from YMMV.

I think we had a thread about SSDs a while ago, a search might help.

I looked around and didn't see anything, besides SSD technology is quickly maturing so information from a few months ago might not be relevant still. For example, if the reviews are to be believed, most of the problems with slow write speeds have been dealt with. The newer control chips in the drive I linked apparently allow write speeds up to 46mb/s vs the previous of 8mb/s.

Fun exercise of the day: Mentally replace the word SSD with STD!

SSD's are extremely fast, but be very careful replacing your laptop hard drive with a aftermarket hard drive, many laptops will have bluescreen issues with unsupported hard drives, especially with a completely different piece of hardware type like that.

There was only one named SSD - The Executor. Described as having bankrupted entire systems to construct, it was eventually destroyed in the Battle above... oh... not those?

(Yes, I genunely thought that first.)

Buy intel; http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820167005 just came down in price

They have the best performance in all reviews of SSDs so far, and they also dont have write stutter.. The SSDs will improve your bootup time og responsiveness of your system,, decide yourself if the money's worth it..

But generally, SSD is the future, they have very tangible gains and aren't all hype. Intel's roadmap suggest that the SSD capacities (http://www.techpowerup.com/img/09-01-30/intelssd30109.jpg) will 4-double from it's september 2008 release generation by Q4 2009.. Way Wayy
    outpacing traditional HDs)

    P.S I own stocks in Intel <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
