Vista in blue.
Why is there a fish?
Sweet, it actually runs pretty smoothly, although I only gave the VM 512 MB RAM.
That's my plan too, although I might skip Windows 7 also if it doesn't do anything that I need. I mean, why bother switching your OS without a good reason?
I guess the main incentive for upgrading to Vista or 7 is to be able to use more than about 3 1/2 gb of memory. Of course then the graphical effects end up taking a slice out of that.

Really if you like XP I don't think there is any reason to upgrade until Microsoft stops supporting XP (releasing security patches).
I'm downloading now and plan to install it to another partition.

Its quite good, its what vista should have been. Runs fast and smooth - almost as smooth as xp but not quite - then again its only beta, there are heaps of neat features - most of the stuff you can do in about 2 or 3 clicks now - and biggest feature of course is how well they have done TOUCH screening - which will be a big thing in the next 12 months you can bet on it.

It seems gimmicki. Stuff like dragging your fingers across the monitor to go to the next picture... Why not just use a button? It's not THAT intuitative. I hoping microsoft learned from the response that they got when vista was released and used it in this release. I wont be installing the beta just yet, but I'm interested in opinions!
I like my sturdy XP but might be refreshing to play with a new UI.
Would be interesting if that touch screen stuff got implemented by 3rd parties: NS2 commanding, healing people by touching them- the future of NS, Michael Jackson style.
Some of it is gimmicky though e.g. shaking a window to minimise others. Sure I can't do that on XP but what's wrong with my maximise button?

Gr... I'm stuck on a 32-bit XP install. 4GB cap ftl.
Hopefully I can skip Vista. Wen I build my next comp, I'm putting in more memory. Luckily, my machine should last awhile, I managed to pull off Crysis, albeit on medium and low settings. It's gonna really die if I get back into video editing or major mapping.
The other reason to jump on the Vista boat was for the whole DirectX10 deal, but mostly that's a joke reason to upgrade.

i think its silly how much everyone hates vista. i have absolutely no problems with it.
on subject though, i'm trying out windows 7 right now, and after getting the ethernet driver installed which wasn't detected for some reason, i'm loving it.
I installed Windows 7, and I'm actually using it as the primary OS for now. It's very nice how I didn't have to download a single driver after the install. So far, no crashes or BSODs. Runs fairly smoothly, and best of all, all applications that would normally work on Vista work on 7 as well, so pretty much full backward compatibility which is a big plus.
Initial impression is that it isn't bad, just different. Installed the video drivers without needing to restart which was rather nice. Going to test games when I get my steam folder copied over.

I tried Win7 over the weekend but ended up uninstalling on Monday because there's just too many bugs to use it as a primary OS. But still, the fact that I was even considering it while it's only on it's first beta is amazing. Oh and I hate Vista too. Win7 fixed almost everything I hated about Vista, and then added a ton of other cool things to at least make up for what I hate.

The only reason I'd consider upgrading is for curiosity's sake.
Im in the midst of trying it. I upgraded from Vista to this and actually prefer it. Vista was buggy, crashy and ran poorly for me while offering little new stuff to make it worth a purchase. This runs a little better (still seems to be some connection issues and video drivers issues with my ATI) and also offers some nice newer features. They managed to hide useful settings even deeper now <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> This feels a lot more like what Vista should have been, some actual bang for you buck (thank god I didn't pay for Vista, yes, I got it legally).
But, like I mentioned above, I have experienced some serious driver issues with my ATI 4850 and the latest drivers (got stuck in one infinite crash loop and had to go back to a restore point once already) which means I will likely drop back to a previous OS soon, but good impressions for a beta. (thank god for a 2nd HDD with all my useful stuff stored on it)
Sounds like they turned an OS into a... <i>game</i>? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />
Why would I want to spend more energy than necessary to perform simple tasks I can currently do with the click of a button?
It has some nice features that aren't gimmicky, like the 'comparing documents' dragging and a dedicated button on the taskbar for 'Minimise All', but it still looks like a waste of system resources will all this whirling, transparent, flashing crap all over the interface. I'm already beginning to sound like a jaded Linux convert and I don't even use Linux (still on XP).
Give me a 'classic' interface option and the choice to uninstall all of that bloatware or, for me, the jury's still out. I don't want a media centre, I don't want to have my screen stuffed full of useless information like what I was doing yesterday unless I ask for it. All I really want is a straightforward, non-gimmicky and streamlined OS.

I've been using it now on my home desktop for a while now. Works rather well but reminds me of vista a lot, lots of quirks and silly design stuff.
Control Panel: no longer classic, baw!
Network panel: now where did they leave my network connection this time;
Taskbar is okay, although I've "lost" apps when they didn't fit on the bar;
IE8: ....I used it, to download FF, then I removed it from the taskbar;
Some bugs/weird things I've encountered:
-sometimes I suddenly I am unable to access my hdds (partitions) in explorer, green bar starts loading and explorer window just sits there restarted explorer.exe to no avail, shutdown took ages so I hit Reset; I was able to use cmd to go places though, weird; -start button froze, just stuck half way the glowing animation, explorer restart fixed that; -windows 7 doesn't sleep well, goes into hibernate fine but wakes up after a couple of minutes; -suddenly lose DNS, changing the DNS entry from our router to ISP's DNS servers fixed it, did the network settings just go corrupt or something;
Haven't exactly measured gaming performance, but it works well.
All in all it doesn't make me want to switch from xp to windows 7
Moved to the beta as my primary OS, no complaints thus far. I did have to disable gammaramp in NS< so I jack up the gamma from the desktop befor eI play, other than that, it's been flawless.
I love the new taskbar, even if it is a blatant OSX Dock copy. Once my Macbook comes in, I think I'll dual on it with Windows7 as well. As far as performance, I've seen no major issues from XPMCE to this. Of course, I'm not running the latest and greatest hardware, but I'm higly surprised by it.
