Well. This is a weird idea, but...

Kharaa Berries

Kharaa Berries, basically, are pickups to aliens, allowing new abilities and powerups at the right cost (hehe).

Bought by alien commander and given to aliens in DI. The requirement to buy one is having a hive assigned to a chamber related to it's function (a berry that raises defensive abilities requires a hive assigned to DC).
They remember rotten/mutant fruits, and to pick up, the alien swallow it. Each alien can carry only one berry (5 slot weapon, a new button is binded just to it) and there is some expecifications of which alien can use which item. If an alien is using a item and envolves into another one that can't use that, the item remains with the alien until it gets on DI, then sold by full refund.
But if an alien dies carrying one, the item is dropped and can be picked up by other aliens... Or stepped/shoted on by marines. The alien can use "drop weapon key" to drop the berry.
After using one, you can't eat another one in X seconds. But I don't know if in alien territory would have problems with spaming, at all, it's the kharaa territory.

Here are some examples of what they could do. In underline is the direct explanation, what to read if you're in hurry or just without patience of reading everything. And in normal text is the deeper details.

-Mucus Bomb (a big cyan slime chunk) {requires DC}
Costs 5 res and given to skulks/gorges, and only they can use. When used, the alien spit the item like a bile bomb, and whenever it hits, all marines/structures in range are sticked in phlegm. On the splash, marines get completely imobile for 1/2 second. Then marines sticked on it will move 1/4 speed, but marines and structures are twice resistant while gooed (and imune to spore). Best used to escape/retard progress than attacking.

-Toxic Orb {requires DC}
Costs 10 and all classes uses. When used, a bigger spore cloud follow them for a while (something like abomination's "Disease Cloud" upgrade in warcraft). The damage/size is proportional to their size (to prevent a cloaked skulk flooding a room with deadly gas). While under effect, touching or knifing the alien cause direct 10 damage or something like this (cnidocytes) with a ridiculous draw back. Touch/knife slash automatically triggers the berry once, if it's not already on effect. Can be used 4 times.

-Solvent Capsule (purple ball scattered with mini-geysers) {requires MC}
Costs 5 res and are to skulks/lerks use. To skulks, makes xenocide stronger, bigger radius and allows the skulk to explode instantly, without 2 seconds delay. Maybe, if used itself, the alien sprays a short-ranged purple liquid (similar to heal spray) that simply drains extremely fast any marine's armor. Incase of lerks, makes a purple spore cloud without using adrenaline, and can be used 10 times.

-Stimpack (a pulsing thing with many eyes) {requires MC}
Costs 10 and skulks/fades/onos uses. Increases fire rate by 25% and movement speed by 50% for 4 seconds, at price of taking 50% more damage for 12 seconds. Can be used 5 times. Using while already on effect stacks the duration of the effect (if I had 2 second of bonus and 10 seconds of counter effects left, using again cause me having 6 seconds of bonus left and 22 seconds of counter effects left). Two timers shows how long will both effects dure. And, the negative effect timer countdown twice faster if the alien is on DI.

-Ink Bulb (a black slimy bubble) {requires SC}
Costs 15-20 res and lerks/fades use it. When used by lerk, it smokescreens where used. The fog is gray and translucend like spore to aliens. But it's pitch black to marines and a marine can't see anything inside it if outside. If inside, it's vision radius is deeply affect. And it dures 3x more than spore. When used by fades, it is thrown via shoulder worm like acid rocket. If hits a marine by front, he (and only he) gets "blind" (you could only see a fade when it's already swipping you) for 7,5 seconds. If misses, the bulb simply falls on the ground, ready to be shot by marines.

-Fungus Sack (pound of mold) {requires SC}
Costs 15 and just gorges use. When used, the gorge spits the wallwalking mold and telepatically controls it (it sees from the mold's point of view), like a spycam. Anywhere, anytime, the gorge can quit the control mode but the mold will be where was left until an alien pick it up. If it's abandoned in the DI and the gorge is on DI too, the mold comes back to the gorge. Also, in this "cam mode" the gorge can order the mold (if it's on the floor) to it becomes a self-building chamber (choosen which one by the gorge). Like, I send the mold where I want and it is deployed there and let there building itself alone. The gorge doesn't have to pay for the chamber, as the cost is included in berry's price, unless it's a resource tower (+5 res). Can't build hives. And, to end it, the self building time takes twice longer the time of a normal gorge building something.

-Pincushion (a miniature of OC's "head", but with 40 thinner spikes) {always disponible}
Costs 10 res, and only lerks uses. Remember of spike gun, long ranged instahit weapon? With this, you can use spike gun 20-40 times (stil using adrenaline).

    While I don't know about the specific examples I think the general idea is solid and what I'd expect the kharaa commander spells to be like, granting abilities to be used by the player.

    Now part of a complete balanced breakfast.

    Kharaa Berries sounds like a breakfast cereal like Captain Crunch or Fruit Loops.

    The idea is interesting, though there's more to consider than interest before implementing a change such as:
    Balance: Sounds like some of these abilities are well worth their cost in resources. I can only imagine what a team full of aliens with Mucus Bomb equipped could do to a human base in a well-organized strike for example.

    Programmability: The fungus pack seems like it'd be very difficult to implement (though admittedly the others don't seem as bad). Don't know how willing unknownworlds is to adding this idea at the expense of several months of work.
