Will there be a ready room?

<div class="IPBDescription">Or will we still be able to victory egg?</div>Hey all,

So this is my first post, I've been following the forum for about two years now and started playing NS around four years ago. I'm always looking forward to news on the development because I'm sure it will be one of the biggest kick ass games ever made, especially with the new engine and the almost starting from scratch mentallity the devs seem to have. I have a feeling this will be like when I watched batman begins and the dark knight and reflected on how previous conotations of batman just weren't as good as they should of been and this was the movie of all batman films ever to be made.

NS was amazing. I loved the back plot, rts/fps blend and its execution but NS 2 will be in a whole league of its own in comparison.

One of the first memories I have of NS was the strange situation of appearing in a room full of aliens and marines runing to portals in which to take them into the game world, it confused me and pleased me. It is really cool to know which map you're playing from a single starting room almost like a primer for your brain to load the new map you'll be playing on into your head, even if there was a random person running around like a headless chicken there. The secret rooms were also a neat thing to discover as well as the floating cheese.

The ready room was also a good place to gloat in glory of a win or to sulk after a lose with plenty of interbanter to be hard and retelling of funny or exciting things that happend to you in game, the victory egg was also funny especially when they jumped around the place and rode the odd onos' back.

I think the ready room must be included in NS 2 because of how amazing it truly was not only as a trigger to each map but also as a room to socialise in before and after the game. I don't know what other people thing of the ready room but in my books it is in my top ten wish list of things that make it from NS into NS 2.

    Welcome -Klaus-!

RR is definitely on my wish list. As you said: it's a great place to socialize before and after a round and the secret rooms were just amazing. It's something that I always believed is a very original feature of NS that other games were lacking (correct me if I'm wrong).

I can't think of any other game from the top of my head that had a 3D ready room, games like C&C etc... have ready rooms in the sense that you can chat to each other before hand but it is so much cooler to have an avatar in which to run/fly/wall walk whilst chatting to others. I can think of any first person games that had a ready room, did unreal tournament have one? Or was it just a free cam with which to view the map with?

Either way the ready room is still pre-mo material from NS that has to be incorporated within its new incarnation.

I personally hope that the Ready Room will be in NS2. I could not imagine NS1 without the Ready Room as I thought it was a great way to enter into a game. I know I would be disappointed if it was not in NS2 because I feel like it is just part of the playing experience now.

Zombie Panic Source stole.. uhm.. copied the readyroom idea for their mod. I don't know of any other mods/ames that have a readyroom though.
The readyroom is a great invention and jsut has to be in NS2, too. It's just amazing to have all the players (teammates AND opponents) from the last round in one place. This actually make the other players feel "more real" and not just names on the scoreboard.

Also i demonad a ready room secret/easteregg in every map! *whipcrack* ;)

ZPO's ready room's are kinda lame though so far. NS's are much cooler for the most part.

I hope the ready rooms are really cool for NS2. It'd be cool to see little things change depending on how the round went. For example:

    1) When you first start the map, warning lights will be going off but the room will otherwise be clean. It will be in somewhat of a 'neutral' state.

    2) If marines win the round, maybe some exterior windows will open up and flood the RR with light and the sirens turn off. 'light' marine victory music plays.

    3) If aliens win, the room grows dark and infestation is growing everywhere. Some lights would be shorting out and flickering. 'light' alien victory music plays.

    Cool.

That's a really cool idea. It would be neat to see that change if multiple rounds are played on the same map too.

Hey that sounds really cool, I’m pretty sure the windows opening idea is more of a mapping technique which has to be implemented by the mapper however the DI on alien victory could be done via programming i believe.

There must be a ready room! It made a huge contribution to the social aspect of the game. NS is the only game I've played where there's a post mortem between all players after a game. It's great to have a breather and chat before the next round gets going.

    Damnit I miss NS now <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

I suspect no one in South Africa plays it any more - we have a pretty small gaming community.

Also, please keep the ping/countdown sound at the start of the round... will be so nostalgic.

    Edit:
Sniff, only 1 NS server in the country and going by the historic graphs, very little activity: <a href="http://www.game-monitor.com/nsmatch_GameServer/196.4.79.17:27015/-_SGS_NS_v3.2_Server_--History.html" target="_blank">http://www.game-monitor.com/nsmatch_GameSe..._--History.html</a>

The Ready Room is one of the things that makes the game so unique. It also works really well as a breather between rounds and maps, a place to type GG and so on.

I'm definitely for building on the feature rather than downplaying it or removing it.

Hopfully they will merge or change it into the original intention combat was, something to do untill there were enough players.
  • ChromeAngelChromeAngel Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 14Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
The original quake had a ready room like area for selecting the difficulty and episode, so NS was hardly original in that.

TBH having to leave room and resources for the RR was an extra level of complexity in mapping for NS. I am hoping they will have a standard RR in its own map for NS2, they can do stuff like that now they have their own engine.

sure we need a ready room.. this is really important

It would be nice to have some game statistics there too. Anything that helps to realize the importance of game aspects like parasiting and such.

How about, instead of the standard UI screen with statistics, use their fancy LUA system to write to a texture in the ready room, and have it be a live score board with important stats on it!

I really like the idea of having different ready room decorations such as infestation from an alien win and lights and electrics turning on after a marine win, that would be really awesome and also open up a lot of possibilities for other changes to occur in the rooms (such as secret doors opening). I also like the idea of a live stat board being present in the room, fortunately some of these nice details wouldn't have to be coded into the game as such but created through LUA which gives a lot of scope for map designers to create very unique ready rooms.

Freaking awesome ideas guys & gals.

How about instead of a regular spectator mode (or in addition to it) there will be displays in the ready room, displaying the actual game going on - viewed by previosuly placed cameras on the map, or from players' views - so the players can have a glimpse of the gameplay before they join (for example if the game is going to end i.e. final-phase spawn camping players wouldn't have to join the losing team only to realise they made a mistake <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

from a technical standpoint it would just be rendering to a texture, however that might be a considerable bandwidth burden for the server to stream several (or just one) rendered image at a reasonable speed

Source had a system in place to do this easily. Not sure if that functionality is going to be included in the NS2 engine.

Could have several that you switched between though..
