PC and LCD TV issues

<div class="IPBDescription">help please :)</div>Hi Everyone,

I'm totally stuck – I bought a 42" philips lcd yesterday and i'm having trouble getting to do anything bar 1024x786 while its plugged into the PC (all else is fine, ps3 / blu ray/ tv plays at full 1080p).

I currently have it plugged in from the pc video card (Nvidia 8600GT ) which has dual dvi out puts (the t.v. has no dvi input however)

(i'm running Vista x64 Ultimate SP1, and have the 15th of Oct 2008 Nvidia drivers)

so it goes

(Video Card) DVI > (converter) DVI to Analag > (cable) Dsub/VGA monitor cable > (TV) vga input

This gets the TV going, but only at 1024x768 which is pretty ugly. And also really choppy – it looks like its only going at like 30hz or something but could just be my eyes. And the mouse movement is delayed (i don't get any of this poo when a typcial flat panel monitor is plugged in dvi on the card to dvi on the monitor, even while i have it dual view – monitor is fine, as soon as i drag over to the tv its choppasaurus and vice versa.)
Both the Windows and Nvidia Control panel sliders go between 640 > 800 >1024
EDIT: in the nvidia control panel it sometimes gets detected as analog display, sometimes as philips FTV.
In the windows control panel it always comes up as Generic PnP display.

I've also tried the same as above but with component cables instead – but then i don't get a picture at all.

------------------
I'm wondering if I fork out $40 bucks and get me a DVI to HDMI cable if this will fix things and get me going at 1080p or 1920x1080 <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
That way i'll have one cable going straight from the PC to the TV.

-------------------

I've also done the lastest firmware update on the TV.

OS: Vista x64
Video Card: 8600GT – latest drivers (15th Oct 2008 release)

WARNING: I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT

A DVI to HDMI cable should work perfectly.

well i'll give the cable a shot later in the week

i spose i could call philips too - but i have a feeling that they will just say its an issue with the pc not the tv rather than actually helping me - but who know sthey might be nice.

I was always able to solve such resolution problems with PowerStrip. It can be a little tricky to get the settings right, bit it allows you to add custom resolutions to windows. I've got a 1920*1200 monitor running with it (sidenote: it worked under linux out of the box).

DVI->HDMI may still be the better option quality wise, since it would be a digital connection (and shouldn't cost $40, more like $5 for an adapter to $10 for a cable).

    as tycho said:
<a href="http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10231" target="_blank">DVI->HDMI</a> (actually ignore this, I don't know what their prices are like for shipping to you people)
Unfortunately you are going to be using standard RCS cables for audio still because it doesn't have a digital in.

I just did this my self with a 42" plasma. almost the exact same set up, but I had to toss in a: Mini toslink -> toslink -> Digital Coax for audio <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

    well i borrowed a hdmi cable of a friend and i can get the full res now <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

only problem is that it keeps flashing black on/off

not sure if it is because of the cable (it may not be 1.3 compliant) or it may be because of the video card not being able to keep up with such a high res.
