ITT: I possibly get sent to collections

<div class="IPBDescription">for like $3000</div>I will keep this short and concise because long stories are dumb and boring. Infact, I will use bullets...

*I signed a lease to live at an apartment complex some time in june
*I decide not to live there and tell them at the beginning of july
*They whine and complain and want me to find somebody to replace my lease (Not easy, infact stupid because the lease doesn't take effect until mid august)
*I never have somebody co-sign my lease so I'm the only person who can be held responsible
*It's now Sept and they are calling me requesting rent even though I made it clear I wasn't going to live there(Left a note and met with them a few times).
*Blah blah blah they will threaten to charge me the full years rent. I think they are bluffing because I'm a poor college student and they have no chance to ever collect the money from me(I have no assets what-so-ever there is like $25 in my bank account). Either that or they will want the $200 lease canceling fee that I can't pay either because I don't have that kind of money (I work to pay for my own rent, I'm a poor college student).

So yeah. Pretty awesome. I'm not really sure why I made this thread, just felt like telling some people. What do you guys think?

Alternate topic: I signed up for some kind of Barack Obama support party thing now they keep calling me requesting that I come volunteer at the local political office to give sexual favors to lobbyists or something. Exciting.

    im a senior in college, and what ive learned is never rent from a company. apartment complexes are generally overpriced, poorly run, and hell to deal with. homes owned by a company are even worse because you can never get in contact with the company, the company will never have anyone do anything if something breaks, and they will still screw you.

    if you get the chance, rent from a single person, or a small realty agency, so you can actually get to know who youre renting the house from, that way you can kinda tell what youre going to be dealing with, and if they know you then they are more likely to help you out.

    Meh, the apartments I'm living in now are much cheaper then on campus and my land-lord is pretty chill. It's just these people at the other complex are pretty ######-bagish.
    I mean, if they honestly try and collect on me I'll just put a warning about their company on the local facebook group.

    leases suck in general. You always have to be damn sure you want to live at that place for the full length of the lease before you sign it, because they will always give you a hard time if you want to get out of it. moved out of my last place a month or two early, and they made us pay the remaining month or two of rent <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

    Last I checked, once you sign into a contract, isn't it the kind of thing where it isn't canceled until both parties agree to the cancellation?

    They may not be able to collect from you, but they can certainly do more to you than that. If they take from your bank account they may put a lean on it, or have it closed by the bank, which then may get you put on the bank's blacklist, making it hard for you to open any account for the next 5 years, as well as completely demolishing your credit.

    I'm talking worst case scenario though, of course.

    Well the deal is that I told them way in advance to the starting date of the contract that I wouldn't be able to make it happen. I even left them a hand-written and signed letter stating my intent, of which they have admitted to receiving. Even the lease itself was badly worded and seemed to imply that I wouldn't be held to the $200 canceling fee until the lease itself had taken effect (Which wasn't until late august when the move-in date was). They also keep telling me they are going to call me about the situation and never do, dropping the ball on their end.
    I mean, if it came down to the courts I would probably win and we both know it.
    I'm not really worried about the situation to be honest.

    Could you post the lease up here? I'm not in any law club or anything, but I have had some practice reading leases. If the contract is worded as you say, you aren't responsible for ######.
    You can tell them to go screw themselves and if they want they can try to take you to small claims court and then end up paying you for legal fees and time wasted. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

    The glory of leases is that they vary state to state. so the advice I have been given as a land lord in Virginia is that the lease is basically worthless to me. In NC I have no idea if that is the case.

    I would see if you can find some place near by that will at least advise you about it. then you know what's up what you can and can't do. Basically on the one hand you have the possibility of getting screwed big time on the credit front if you screw up, secondly you get the whole pay the full lease without getting to live there deal. Its a great Idea to you know figure out exactly what you can and cant do before you do/don't don something you should here. keep in mind that 200$ is still less than you will pay a lawyer here.

    Worst case scenario, we all loan you 5$ bucks you pay the 200$ you own to cancel the contract, not hire a lawyer, and move on. That or mansitiuton, credit card debt, or throwing a party to pay the rent. most of those are better than having to pay more money later for essentially no service.
