It's fun. I had to register a second time in order for it to let me log in.. I would recommend when you make your username do not put capitals in it. You make an in-game name after you log on anyways.
The game is fun... It's like Gunz but with a cyberpunk twist. You get guns and special powers and swords. Who doesn't like swords?
In game I am Rek55.

Unfortunately it seems to get repetitive very fast.
Possibly because it is a beta, but still.
Some random notes:
1) Do the training.
2) Then go to the Shop and click on the license button for each of the weapons and skills. Complete the licenses and you get a free 5 hr version of the item/skill.
3) Look over the missions and work in each of your 3 missions into your matches for a quick $$ boost (dodge == space+ A or D when you have the energy and are not reloading, and you can do it in mid air).
That is about it.
I got to level 3 and am now starting to burn out ;(
Might still play some more, the nick is thansal.
Oh, and no cyber punk.
Just anime.
Just anime.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Computer screen shields? Sentry guns? energy guns of all shapes and sizes? swords with obvious techy stylings?
How is it not cyber punk?
How is it not cyber punk?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Because Cyberpunk isn't about that?
Cyberpunk is supposed to be Highly polished shiny worlds with incredibly gritty undersides. The tech is normally not fantastic, but hyper extensions of what we have already.
Bah, it is just standard Korean animeish stuff.
I can't really describe it, but the game holds nothing of Cyberpunk in it. Go read some Gibson or Stephenson and we will talk again <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
It could be a game in a cyberpunk world, or a TV show, or a sport, but it isn't Cyberpunk.

I will agree this definitely does not have the gritty underside nor does it have the other societial aspects of cyberpunk that you are referring to (and that I don't know much about), but the art style I believe to be reminiscent of cyberpunk. It's not just standard anime. It's got that techie twist to it.
It seemed that referring to it as cyberpunk was the easiest way to communicate the art style to others without the benefit of a picture.
What Gibson/Stephenson are you recommending? I definitely wouldn't be opposed to doing some reading so I could understand what Cyberpunk really is.
From Gibson, start with the Sprawl trilogy, when I think Cyberpunk that is what I think.
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sprawl_trilogy" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sprawl_trilogy</a>
Neuromancer (THE book people think of when talking about the genre)
Count Zero (Probably my favorite)
Mona Lisa Overdrive.
Also read Burning Chrome (the collection of short stories which includes the short story Burning Chrome). You can read either first, though a few of the stories in the short stories show up in the sprawl trilogy (Including some stuff from Johnny Mnemonic, yes the story is much better then the movie <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />).
I don't like Stephenson as much, but Diamondage is a good one to read.
<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Cyberpunk is a science fiction genre noted for its focus on "high tech and low life." The name is derived from cybernetics and punk and was originally coined by Bruce Bethke as the title of his short story "Cyberpunk," published in 1983,[1] although the style was popularized well before its publication by editor Gardner Dozois. It features advanced science, such as information technology and cybernetics, coupled with a degree of breakdown or radical change in the social order.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
as for the game - haven't tried it yet =p and as for cyberpunk - now I have an urge to go play Shadowrun on the SNES...

Yeah, and I have actually read that before (long time ago). Gives a different flavor when you actually read the books though, I think.
cyberpunk and steampunk have become more like just hype words to give people the impression of the art style while also connecting with "punk" to make it seem more cool. I really have just been using them as reference to art styles because they really both are their own styles and there is no way to describe the style as quickly as saying one of those two.
It's very Fantasy Star/Advent Rising style. Plus, you gotta love the music and the dancing halftime show.
But yeah, make sure you don't do ALL the licenses all at once, especially if you want to save money. Also, having a melee weapon handy is usually a good idea, unless you are really good at dodging like me.
Have yet to try it.
just use the damn revolver <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
I hate their network code. It makes no sense to me how they are doing it and it causes huge problems... Some people can't be killed, some people kill me way faster than they ever should...
Jumping around with my mind blaster thingy (which auto aims and steals heath) around someone with 1 hp for MY ENTIRE LIFE BAR is just ridiculous. I died. He needed to be hit once and the damn weapon wouldn't go.
I did all the liscences way too fast. I thought that it was 5 hours in real time and then it goes away , not 5 hours of playing time.
I've almost got enough to buy two weapons though, and still have 5 hours left on my original weapons and 2 or 3 on my mind blast/shock thingy.
It will be a while before I can get a skill though.

BTW, why shouldn't you do all the licenses?
It is 5 hrs of play time WITH that item (Or at least it looked like it), so honestly it is no big worry.

It is if you sell them all for profit because you don't realize it works like that.
oops <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
As for the 'setting' it's what I like to call 'white future' (because there's lots of white stuff... kinda like ipods or the starship enterprise XD ). Generally 'white future' is the anime-styled future where it's somewhat utopian with fantastical tech. There's no real gritty underside and combat is either for entertainment or from outside enemy. There may be political intrigue and whatnot but everyone seems to live a pretty good life. That's my definition of 'white future' <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
For examples of 'white future' think Phantasy Star Online, Star Ocean and even star trek to some degree.
I sometimes worry that 'white future' will be mistaken as being kinda 'WHITE POWA!' or something but to date nobody seems to have gotten the wrong idea luckily :3
Not a bad name for it. Are you in game yet? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
I can't figure out how the community thing works, I don't know how to add friends if they're not in the same channel as me / not online.

I poked that a bit and I think the answer is "you don't".
It means I don't need to decide what skill I want just yet.
I have bought one weapon in its unlimited form so far: The mindshock. It's just neat to be able to hit people through walls and is a very nice finisher. My first character is going to be set up for close combat I think, and is probably gonig to have a plasma sword, smg, mindshock, and either hp+30, shield, or the hook thing. Hook is great fun for finding sneaky paths to get behind people, and hp+30 is good if i'm surrounded... shield is obviously just good. I'm normally not surrounded (because i play smart) so I guess I just need to decide between mobility or invincibility. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
Revolver - Gauss Rifle - Long SMG - Shield
My style of play is kill anything that moves. If it closes, unload with the revolver, if they are at long range, long range SMG, if it is mid range, Gauss Rifle. carrying 3 also means that I never really run out of ammo.
I tried out the swords, don't like them.
I tried out the mindshock and thought it sucks (the damage it deals is worthless).
Sniping just bothers me (I will probably keep a character around to deal with other people sniping).
and I haven't really tried out the sentry guns yet.
Honestly, I think it is a great game for a beta. Can't wait for some actually semblance of content to show up <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
Once my warhammer fervour has calmed I'll probably set about hopping on at some pont. Probably not this week though xD
What's everyone calling themselves on S4? I'll come add you guys to my friends whenever I come on :3

Swords are useful because when you have one out you run faster.
Mindshock is pretty lame, but it shoots through walls so I find it useful to weaken people when they are behind a block or through the side of a building. I might change my mind on that and go for a revolver in addition to my other two, but I haven't decided yet. It's also nice because it restores a bit of HP which probably lets me live another second longer.
I think it's definitely a great game for beta. I've been thinking about this in terms of game design and I really like how all the weapons are available to anyone regardless of level. In fact, the people who have just started the game have more available to them than people who have been playing for a while (this actually bothers me a bit).
It's neat. Someone that is higher level than you only has the advantage in terms of experience.

I found a pretty neat exploit/bug to mock-duplicate an item. It lets you equip the same item in two slot so you basically have twice the ammo clip. (You can just switch to the other one rather than reload)
Here's how to do it:
1. Deequip the item in slot 1, put the item you want in slot 2. Log out, log in. slot 1 will have the same item equiped as slot 2.
2. Deequip weapons in slot 1 and 2, put the one you want in slot 3... log out, log in, slot 2 will have the same weapon as slot 3 and slot 1 will have some other weapon in it (from your inventory).
Method 2 might allow you to triple a weapon if it's the only weapon you own. You might also be able to do method 2 without deequipping the slot 1 weapon.
I found this out because I can't afford 3 weapons for my second character and I logged in today and noticed I had two revolvers. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
