CS but not Half Life, can I play?

I have the original counter-strike installed, however I don't have Half Life. This seems weird because isn't CS just a mod of Half Life? What I'm asking is if I can play this without installing HL, but having CS.

    I don't think you can play this with just CS.

    CS did start out as a mod for Half-Life until it was bought by Valve.

    If you have CS retail you can register that with steam, which should give you access too the valve back-catalogue, which includes HL.
