Bunny Hopping?

TsearTsear Join Date: 2008-07-29 Member: 64726Members
I've looked through the new player and kharaa forums at guides, but can't seem to find one that explains how to bunnyhop well. Bunnyhopping as a skulk only seems to make me go slower, which is weird because gorges bunny hopping can sometimes go faster than skulks running =/ If someone could explain this relatively simple skill to me, I'd appreciate it a lot. It's just ridiculous to be able to fade/lerk just fine but to fail at skulk because of no bunny hopping.

    The basics:

DO NOT PRESS FORWARD OR BACKWARD!

As a skulks you need to hold duck, or you will stick to the ground/wall cause of the wallwalk ability <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Fire up half-life and use a special script to enable autojumping.

    <!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->alias +1n "alias _special 2n; 2n"
alias -1n "alias _special; -jump; -duck"
    alias 2n  "3n; wait; special"
    alias 3n  "4n"
    alias 4n  "+duck; alias 3n 5n"
    alias 5n  "+jump; alias 3n 6n"
    alias 6n  "-jump; alias 3n 5n"

    bind "space" +1n<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->

When in midair strafe right and move your POV to the left. Then on the next jump strafe left and move your POV right. Repeat!

Edit: Just in case you didnt notice:
    This will make you bhop backwards <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />
In order to go forward you have to strafe left + turn left then strafe right + turn right.

<a href="http://www.fidosrevenge.com/bhop/" target="_blank">This</a> has the basics quite simple. The basic idea is that you'll strafe to the side you're turning and never press forward or backwards while hopping. You'll probably want to have a 3jump script or use mousewheel for jumping at first, so that you won't have to focus on timing so much.

I got the basic grasp by setting up a LAN server and selecting ns_veil. Then set "sv_cheats" 1 and "cl_showspeed" 1. You should see the speed on the top right. Your running speed should be a little below 300 and it might go over 300 while turning and moving your mouse on certain motions. Notice how jumping stops you from losing your speed momentarily.

When you think you've figured enough of the effects, try to hop from the c12 area to the marine start without losing too much speed on the ground contact. You should get the optimal timing by using your 3jump or mousewheel a little before actually landing. While turning you should be strafing to the inner corner of the curve. The curves might get your speed up a bit, maybe up to 400 or so. That's the very basics.

After you think you can maintain the running speeds, go ahead and try it anywhere you want. Basically you can practise it on public servers all the time. Just try to hop whenever you had been running before.

Oh, I almost forgot the ducking part. You don't have to press it down any longer, since the skulk doesn't stick to the floor. However, it might help you to avoid sticking to the walls if you can press it down comfortably while hopping.

also, NSLearn still exists and has awesome stuff.

Cool, thanks a bunch. I'll practice this up.

It also helps if you practice with someone who knows how and can help correct early mistakes. Also, maps like ns_bhop and ze_marinebhop are useful for practicing.

A good way to get the motion down is to go on co_faceoff, set gravity to 0 and work on doing figure 8s in the air. This way you can practice strafe and mouse coordination. Once you got that down, bind mwheelup/mwheeldown to +jump or use a 3jump script and work on ns_bhop.

Oh yeah and there's a guide that covers all fun movement types here:
    <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns/forums/index.php?showtopic=102099" target="_blank">http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns/forums/ind...howtopic=102099</a>

PM me and I can come practice with you.

The funny thing is, even though I know that using +forward ever will limit your speed, I still always use it quickly between jumps. And I still get really high speeds. I think while it slows you down a tad (less and less if you use it at the perfect time), it safeguards against stonewalling. That is, missing some aspect of the bhop and losing so much speed that you're going slower than a normal forward run. It seems to happen now and then when I try to the no-forward bhop, and it annoys me, so I just go back to my regular method and mash. Maybe I'm lowering my potential by a certain %, but there's only one person I've ever seen that can get a noticeably higher speed than me. Props, Core.

It doesnt matter if you use forward or not. I always use forward.
What matters is the time on the ground, in an ideal case this time is zero.

The rest of the time you have to strafe in the air -> done.

Oh and binding jump on mousewheel and/or any kind of alias script is lame <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

    Wow, just wow.

This means you dont bhop and that you max speed increase is waaaaay behind what it could be.

    Yup.

    Don't press forward.

Bind mwheel and do whatever it takes to make it easy to bhop.

I don't think that's the flatline vodga. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Can't say for sure, but I'm pretty certain that is 'the flatline wodka'. Consider yourself corrected.

strafe left look 30degrees left (whilst jumping) strafe right and look 30 degrees in the same direction. release W before each strafe.

Sometimes you strafe left and turn right and then vice versa (you go backwards). That's how you impress your friends.

And then you do a jump with a 360.. before being eaten by an Onos.
