I built and configured myself a computer for my car. Included are lots of pretty pictures.

That's some serious DIY. "Well this didn't have enough power so I just hooked it up to a floppy drive that I gutted and this was overheating so I just cut a giant chunk out of it and stuck a heatsink on" etc. Awesome stuff.

I was gonna make my own carputer, but i'm a little scared of screwing up my dash board to do it.

I like it, I considered doing something of this sort for awhile then I realized my car is a piece of crap. The only things I would have done differently (at this stage of construction you seem to be on) is instead of purchasing a cigarette-plug power supply for the laptop, I would have just spliced the computer power directly into the cars 12volt line (This is the same one used for the cigarette lighter plugs). It would be pretty easy to cook-up a circuit to boost that to whatever voltage your laptop required (usually around 15-20 volts I'd think). Would have cost a lot less too.

Not particularly. The power adapter was AUD$30, not exactly bank-breaking. Very little would be gained by doing it by hand. I'm planning to wire it straight to a 13.8v rail somewhere once I work out how to reliably turn the laptop on and off.
