You can make Public groups Private if you're an admin. Just go to the group 'Settings' tab.
P.S. I joined the group and for an entire weekend it seemed nobody was idling in the chatroom and there were no gaming events. I'm thinking this is maybe fairly US-centric in terms of actually socialising and stuff.

Earlier in the week I had some great games on ES with subzero and spinviper.
I don't think anyone actually cares to idle in the chat, but if you invite people in they sometimes come in. (That's what I did with spin and sub i think)
