<div class="IPBDescription">Discuss.</div>So I just completed the game. TBH, I enjoyed it to be sure, but I don't know where the critics were pulling their 97.5% review average out of (unless it was out of Rockstar's pocket). Honestly, I liked San Andreas much better. There were some good characters in IV - Niko, Roman, Jakob, Brucie, and Packie were all lovable and memorable, but the rest felt like cookie cutter gangsters and thugs.

Also, while it was a good microcosm of NYC, the city was entirely boring if you ask me. SA had a bunch of different areas, each with their own feel - LA, San Fran, Las Vegas, beaches, the desert... so much more variety. IV felt like nothing but projects and skyscrapers.

Also SA had much more replay value IMO - the one thing I ever came back to a GTA game for after beating it was to fly vigilante missions in the attack heli in SA. That never got old. Playing with the tank was fun too. No such luck for either in IV. All in all, I'd say the plot was pretty good, but other than that, no real improvements over its predecessors other than graphics... no clue why it took them so long to release it.

agree/disagree? is there already a GTA IV thread I overlooked? =p

PM me when this goes PC.
I really want to play this game, let's hope they do as with SA and port it (port is such a ugly word).

Personally, I would have fun with the euphoria engine, the one that haves to drives you throw out of their cars get stuck in the door.

    Someone give me a ps3.

How is the draw distance in this?
  • DiscoZombieDiscoZombie Join Date: 2003-08-05 Member: 18951Members
draw distance is great - I played on the 360 and I never saw anything fade in late like it did in previous games. the physics are also entertaining - it's amusing getting hit by cars and watching your body flip entirely over...

I bought it but really haven't played much after unlocking the 3rd island.

It's the best GTA, but it's just a refinement of previous GTAs and isn't fresh enough to keep me entertained.

Totally agree with DiscoZombie's comment on the almost perfect review scores- it's a great game but it's far from a perfect game.

I think im just about to finish it and so far I like it very much, I never bothered to play SA for long cause of the "hood" talk though so no comment on that.

Euphoria made the whole game for me, it's just so different from preanimated and ragdolls. Flying a helicopter and constantly repairing it with cheats while whipping the streets with the rotorblades is also quite high on the list.

heh all I ever play the GTA3+ series for are stunts. and some of the storyline, but other then that it's just me driving around tuning cars, flipping cars, shooting up the town, trying to escape from the law, flipping some more cars and of course some motorcycle speed testing...

Other then that, it's on the PS3... And I hope they also "port" this game to the PC. The GTA series is one of the few that actually plays really well on the PC (dare I say better <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> )

Probably my favorite of all the GTAs. Sadly I haven't played much because my 360 broke shortly after I bought the game, it's in for repairs now so hopefully soon I can get back to it.

The ragdoll and model animations are incredible though. I yipped in happiness the first time I had Niko shove a guy down a staircase.

New engine, new systems, etc. The assets in this game with their undeniably greater complexity aren't exactly as easy to pump out as the old stuff. There's plenty of new stuff, not neccessarily good, but it's there and the city is undeniably massive & densely packed with detail (SA is also massive, but there were tons of places where there was absolutely nothing interesting anywhere remotely close)

All in all, I'd say good game. Fun. Like the new control scheme, hate the old autoaim (yes, yes, i know there's an option, and I did turn it off). In the end I didnt give a flying squirrel for any of the characters and didn't feel at all bad about <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>either kate or roman dying. I was actually kinda glad to see them go.</span> Dating and hanging out with people was more annoying than anything. I blew people off as much as possible. Not going to be replaying. bring on MGS4!

The game's fairly fun, but the missions get old and become more of a chore (And I haven't even gotten off the first island). Luckily I didn't buy it and I'm just playing my friend's copy.

    Online.
    16 modes. Tons of fun.
If the online modes didnt get the game from 90 to 100%, I dunno what did.

Yeah, the thought of online gta 4 is driving me crazy for it.

I love it, the car chases make the game worth buying alone. The story is engaging too, i need to buy it, renting if for a week only left me wanting more <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

Only tried it a bit at the Kiosk. Like you people said, same old game, shinier graphics.
The car still handling and flying as if it's made of carton. Street pole still comes off if your pinky finger touches it. The city still looks like a ghost town.

It's fun, but played this game when it was called GTA: San Adreas.

I never understood why they coded street poles to come off. It would take considerable force to dislodge it from its base I would think

Because it's easier than making them realistically bend, and the other option would be to make them not do anything and just stop your car... Which feels very lame to the player.

Having them come off, while unrealistic, makes the player feel they are driving faster and crashing harder than they otherwise would. Also they tend to be hit a lot and it would be much more frustrating to be stopped by them than to complain about the unrealistic bits.

Some poles do stop you no matter how fast you race into them.
    Ghost town? gtfo, seriously.
Car handling is carton free imo, a TON more realistic compared to any GTA predessecor.

Online is a ghost town, even if Pedestrians and Traffic are on high it feels empty and vacant.

Cars handle like their tires are buttered and the streets are made of wax, not very fun.

watch the trailers, the game is not meant for realism, but rather based on it and changed for funner gameplay.

I don't know, I thought playing the game may be a good substitute for trailers.

Whys everyone so pissed at the car handling? Yeah, it's not realistic. But it's good. Don't try to drive like the cars are real. Try to drive them like they're from GTA IV. I love the handling. It's predictable and easy to control, especially at high speeds. I don't know what everyone is so bitter about.

Also, you get annoyed hitting a tree that doesn't fall down. Why do you want to hit a traffic pole that doesn't fall down? Quit complaining about that too -- at least it looks good this time around when poles get uprooted.
  • XythXyth Avatar Join Date: 2003-11-04 Member: 22312Members
I find the car handling to be MORE realistic actually. Trying to make a 90 degree turn at 50 mph in real life is near impossible, it's the driving in the other GTAs which was unrealistic.

one trailers explains why they didn't leave it new york city like they modeled the game after, and why they dont keep a lot of things 'real'.

Of course they gotta leave most things arcadey to keep the fun up. But certain things feel alot more real compared to any of the other gta's.
Cops for instance, you cant just walk up to a cop and beat him and take his gun like you could do with ease..now he backs up with his gun drawn if you decide to approach him violently.
Cars of course, handles with "realism" I would say. The center of gravity in the cars are no longer in the middle of the car, removing the cardboard like feel of the driving in the other gta's. Was the first thing I noticed in the game.
Physics is just wow. Never has pushing people down stairs been so fun.

You play GTA for realism? And certain it's not realistic in GTA4, I've never driven a car in real life that's handled so poorly.

He was a professional soccer (football) player before he came to LC it would seem.

As for car handling, at low speeds they handle perfectly well. The turning ability just degrades very quickly when you start to pick up speed.
