<div class="IPBDescription">DIY questions</div><img src="http://www.uoguelph.ca/~hayt/beethoven.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

This is a plaster cast bust of beethoven, worth nothing, I just think he's awesome. Prior to it coming into my possession my sister was his owner. She dressed him in clown wigs, gave him makeup and covered him in tape. He is in need of some dignity so I want to clean him up. If I want to repaint him can I get some sort of a spraycan primer and then paint right over the top? What type of paint should I use? I'll give him a toothbrush scrub and try to remove all the tape. Also what about the chip in his nose, can that be repaired by some sort of putty?

I've got no hardware knowledge so why not ask random people (i.e you guys) what to use.

That expression is clearly the result from years of abuse by said sister <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

Painting over the tape residue might make it look old and cool.

I think you'd be better off scrubbing it off though because it will still be noticeable if you just paint over it.

I don't know about the chip on the nose though.

Use goo-gone or any other strong citrus based cleaner to remove what's left of the tape. To repair his nose bump I'd just use some spackling (It's a white putty used to repair dents put into walls) and just sand it down after it dries. As for repainting, just get a spray-can of white or off-white primer and give him a few coats of it. Make sure you spray from a foot or more away so that it goes on evenly. That's a nice bust though, how much does it weigh?

Finely sand it down and shape it to make it look as normal as possible, in 100 years people will probably think that was the real shape of his nose.

I'd say in the order of 10 pounds or so. Since it's just a cast it's hollow on the inside.

It's near life size, ~ foot and a few inches tall

I'll try suggestions above - thanks. I think I'll give him a bath first.

What about getting it 're-casted'? Would that cost a lot?

As mentioned <a href="http://www.googone.com/products_gg.aspx" target="_blank">Goo Gone</a> is excellent for removing the sticky stuff:

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->* For all those gooey, sticky, gummy, greasy cleaning problems
    * Removes chewing gum, grease, tar stickers, labels, tape residue, oil, blood, lipstick and mascara, shoe polish, crayon, bumper stickers
    * Works on carpets, upholstery, clothing, wood, and cement
    * Environmentally safe and can be used on any surface<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
When you're done cover it with <a href="http://www.kilz.com/pages/default.aspx?NavID=30" target="_blank">Kilz Upshot</a>, which is meant for ceilings but is an excellent stain blocker / primer.

All that's left is to spray it with a decent can of acrylic latex, color of your choice. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

The nose can be patched with spackling paste or wood putty: apply, and sand smooth.

Look at his eyes/eyebrows. He looks like an 18th century Super-Saiyan.

3M's base cleaner is awesome at taking just about anything off a surface, if you can get it that is, its a commercial product.

It's all good, Thaldy. I do believe that under the international "fair game" treaty of 1993, we are now entitled to one (1) murder committed against him. We can perform it either collectively or individually, but we must act within 90 days or file a motion for postponement, otherwise we lose it again.

no, but that was the desired illusion. It'd be a heavy piece of headgear if it did fit. I think i'll make my home hardware trip this weekend, get all the crap I need.
