I found this game a day or two ago and have been having a blast with my friend on LAN. Unfortunately there is a limit on the number of non-lan net games you play, as well as a 3 day limit on the trial. This game isn't all that great until you play multiplayer though. A whole lot of fast paced strategy and action with a very simple control scheme.
20$.
I don't think it's necessarily worth 20 bucks, but then again I've played it for about 10+ hours in the last two days with my friend.

Yes. LAN version is feature complete. The only real limitation to the trial version is that it expires in 3 days and that you can only play a limited number of games over the Net.
I don't think it's worth 20 bucks because what you see there is what you really get. All the other "game modes" in single player can only be played in single player in the full version, and are all just crappy mods to the original game.
edit:
I suggest you play through the tutorial at some point because it tells you how to do some things you probably wouldn't have found out on your own.
Personally my favorite gamemode is:
65 Planets
50 Starting Ships
3 Home Planets
15 Home Production
I feel it gives a more strategic experience than the default settings. The starting ships and home planets aren't really important, but making it so the home planet is not very useful means that the start game is more interesting and players don't just expand from their home base, they actually might decide to send all their troops to a different cluster.
The other gamemode we tried was the same except 1 Home Planet with 200 Production. This is a fun mode but I feel that the importance of that home planet is just too great. To elaborate a bit, the 200 production means that unless your opponent is attacking with a $%@#load of units, the defending ships will be building faster than they can be destroyed.
