Engine of NS2

It will do 4 years that Half-Life 2 has been released this november... Doesnt it sounds like odd to make this crazy new mod on that 'source' engine... I loved natural selection 1 , was cool, but the mod is maybe a little bit late to go out on source, doesn't you guys think so? A few third parties mod are still popular but even there... I think if you guys didn't strongly started the mod already, you could use another engine. Like crytek's engine, Real lovers of natural selection would piss in their pants to see your new mod on such engine... Well Its just an idea...

4 years since HL2 has been released, less than a year since Team Fortress 2 and Portal have been released. Both of those games have been hailed as some of the best games ever made. The Source engine scales downwards much better than the Crysis engine does. Looks are not the only consideration when it comes to making a game.

The Source engine is very versatile and runs across a wide spectrum of computers, old and new. If they used one of the brand new engines such as Crysis, they would be alienating a large majority of their audience, as a lot of people do not have computers with good enough specifications for those game engines.

Regardless, the Source engine is very much still a good competitor in the gaming world. Episode 2 brought with it many new graphical enhancements, and whilst it may not look as 'nice' as Unreal, I think it has a certain charm about it; just perfect for NS2.

I agree to a point. It would [if released NOW] be popular, but the longer they wait, the less popular any game will be. You can even compare games that have followings for years and years, but those are about one in twenty, at best...

It seems like it will depend on when they release the game, and games DO get to a point where the engine is just too dated. Sometimes it's almost hard on the eyes.

I played Grim Fandango I think 4-5 years after it had came out, and to this day it is still my favorite game of all time. I actually couldn't touch another game for at least a week, it was just ######ing great. It wasn't the graphics, it was the story, but I don't think NS2 will have any story other then maybe some "one time, pre game text" [no offense meant Mr Developers]. It isn't meant to be a single player game right? So how many people will play it with dated graphics?

Sure TF2 is popular, now... Two years down the line? Even hardcore gamers have been moving through games faster nowadays, not just because of dated graphics, but because we move on to newer stuff [especially online games].

It does seem like the Steam engine [if you have to choose an older engine] is probably the best choice. I really want it to not suck, and NOT just be a graphics update to an older game. I really hope it rocks... I loved NS1!

I agree with PogoP.
Moreover you have to consider that Valve keeps updating their engine with new features and since UWE licensed the whole thing they can do updates on their own.
As long as there are good games and mods coming out for HL2, I don't see a problem with decreasing popularity.

Decreasing popularity of what?
Less players = less servers = less chance to play the game.
And that's bad.

Please do a search before posting, this has been brought up many, MANY times before. The devs have said they have a license to the Source engine and will develop the game on it, and will likely use the newest version available by release time.
