Tech help- USB ports locking up?!

My cheap replacement USB mouse kept freezing when running programs, I figured it was the mouse but I've tested a USB keyboard and my semi-broken Razer mouse and both those lock up too.

The peripherals are still being powered (the Razer mouse glows- finally a use for something that probably added £10 to the mouse) but they just freeze up. The frequency depends on the game I'm running- Firefox does it rarely, TF2 does it sometimes, CoD4 spends as much time locking out my mouse as it does let me use it.

It happens on both USB ports.

What's going on- is the motherboard dying a slow death?!

Thanks!

[Edit- more info]

(15:04:12) (sherpa) it started when i replaced my ps2 keyboard with the usb one
(15:04:25) (sherpa) and i thought it was a problem with having a usb keyboard and mouse at the same time
(15:04:30) (sherpa) so went back to the ps2 keyboard
(15:04:34) (sherpa) and now mouse keeps dying
(15:04:50) (sherpa) but the programs continue to run, sound and frame-rate is fine
(15:04:59) (sherpa) and it accepts inputs on my ps2 keyboard when the USB mouse gets locked out

As long as your mice/keyboards aren't locking up other computers, I'd say it's USB controller issue on your motherboard. I wouldn't worry about the rest of your motherboard dying a slow death, just buy a PCI USB controller card and bob's your uncle.

Did you install some crap together with the usb keyboard?
Maybe it's some software/driver from that, which causes the problems wether it's back to ps2 or not.

Thanks, think I might do that (I noticed on the System Device tab in the CP that the mouse is being removed when it locks up say I guess you're right!

    Nope! The USB keyboard was a £5 plug-and-play one from my local food supermarket <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

reinstall your mouse drivers, or find newer ones online. Your mouse might also have firmware to update.

    It's definitely the USB ports.

I went to the extent of finally connecting my front-side case USBs to the motherboard and those locked up, too.

A couple of days ago the USB ports died completely and Windows gets angry whenever I plug something into them.

In the mean time I'm using a USB->PS2 converter that came with my USB keyboard on a USB mouse (and the mouse works fine), whilst I wait for a £5 USB controller (thanks SnappyCrunch!) I bought from ebay to arrive.
