Darkness

I know this game is striving for immersion, so how dark will some areas of the maps get? Will there ever be areas of pitch blackness? I think areas such as those used in moderation can add a lot a level/map. However, I'm not a fan of maps where there are large expanses of dark or hard to see areas. It can really detract the gameplay.

    No, it won't be that dark. Our goal is that you can play the game during the day when you should be outside exercising.

    but i hope its darker as NS1

    it should not like ep1 zombie capter but nearly on it

    that a flashlight have his use
    and the hivesight/alien normal sight can recive a boost

    also the "aura" should whitout sof looks blue or a other colour whit big differences to the walls/other things

    that the alien know which target is hurt ( make ambushes easyer. "hey fade, attack the orange guy, we take the red" )

    Changing the alien advanced hivesight so it doesn't obscure health is definitely something I support. I like the color coding for that purpose. Knowing how hurt marines are through SoF would be good. It probably shouldn't be the default though as it's pretty powerful information.

    but i want to see that the marines arent only "white ghost like" like in ns1
    maybe you can only see them ..ehmm.. blue or a other colour whitout sof

    Darkness is a balance mechanic in addition to adding cool points. With that said, I think it can be fun in the right situaitons.

    i imiginate that all rooms/corridors who are nearer to the hive positions darker is

    all corridors by the marine spawn are lighted

    the DI/nanobots darkener or light up the corridors

    Seems like if you did create it, it would simply be a waste of nanites. They can't come that cheaply...

    Excellent. I love the dark areas but sometimes makes it well annoying when i'm playing during the day and keep dying because I can't see anything <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

    It's a childish joke that's being used ironically. It's sort of like saying 'yo mama' but in an intentionally lame way. In short, it's a throw away post that should be ignored and probably sums up his opinion of this topic.

    I personally like the dark areas, useful for skulking and when i'm a marine it adds to the "oh crap skulks!" factor when we don't have motion tracking. I still jump sometimes when I'm not expecting an ambush. Health info with sensory chamber would be good as well. Personally though I like the white alien flashlight.

    I have the opposite concept of darkness. It can ADD to the gameplay, and provide a dimension to the gameflow which is missing from many other games.

    I guess I don't have to tell you I love games like AvP2 and Doom 3.

    Does NS really use darkness as a game mechanic though?
    I guess it sorta does.. Alien: darkness is your friend, Marine: darkness if your enemy
    Sorta. gamma-hacking doesn't help.

    games that use darkness as an actual game mechanic are, eg. splinter cell or other stealth games. can't really think of anything more atm.

    there arent that many games that use darkness
    becouse its useless in this typical first person shooter

    but ns2 isnt a typical FPS
    skulks and all other aliens have a bonus in dark areas
    marines should stay in light
