ID is a cool project... I reserve judgement for when both NS2 and ID are completed though. At the time ID development started, NS2 development was basically "ya, we're making NS2!" With absolutely nothing at all even slightly to show for it. Alot of other NS fans didn't think that NS was really ready to be a business yet either. So ID was started to make what we felt NS should have been back in the day, and what NS2 should be.
It will not be an "NS clone". The design is very very different. But at least there is no alien commander.
