    The Mayans hypothesized that a new cycle would begin in 2012. This does not mean the end of the world. Most scholars believe that as far as the Mayans were concerned, nobody would notice anything out of the ordinary, just like on January 1st nobody would have known it was a new year unless their calendar said so.
