Defragmenting programs?

<div class="IPBDescription">Which ones?</div><b>Edit</b>

Well, this thread really felt half assed to me, so I went ahead and rewrote it (sorry for the misleading title), so if anyone wants to answer all of these questions, feel free, or if only a few, that's fine too.

Anti-Virus
Whats the best antivirus out there, in your opinion? Include both free and purchasable if you would like to. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" /> (I have AVG right now)

Spyware Catcher
I have ad-aware SE - reliable? Or are there preferred others?

Defragmenting Program
I've heard that Microsoft's Defragmenting isn't exactly the best on the market. Any suggestions for defragmenting tools? Thanks!

Clutter on the Computer
I've been looking to also clean up clutter on my PC, such as leftover files from program's I've uninstalled. I'd like to go through and delete the remnants of those programs, but where would they be hiding? Just inside the program files folder, or perhaps elsewhere? And what is a surefire way of knowing that it's just a clutter file, but not a useful file?

Internet Problems
I've been having frequent problems with disconnects on my internet. I have a router, may it be anyway related to the issues or is it purely my ISP? If the router can be related, then what might the problem be? I have a Linksys WRT54GS as my router if anyone cares to go in depth on this issue in boredom.

Thanks for the help, I'm trying to get my computer up and running a bit faster, and also trying to clean it up.

    What sort of internet disconnect issues? Are you using wireless? Also, I don't like linksys at all. I've had nothing but problems with them (and it seems they come for free with every thing, so Im constantly fixing them for my neighbors. Yet everyone I've ever setup with a good Belkin router has never had an issue.)

    Random drops in the connection. I'm physically connected to it, but others use the wireless. If you were to have something such as an IP phone setup, would changing your router cause you to reconfigure your IP phone? Or will it be a plug-and-playish kind of outcome?

    Sanity. Not purchasable. Aside from that, just use an online scanner that runs like 20 anti-viruses on your pc.

    Once again, sanity. Aside from that, ad-aware SE, spybot s&d, etc.

    D&D defrag. You can set it to "stealth" and it'll check how much memory you're using while defragging and use the spare memory, you won't even notice it's running.

    Check the installation folder of the program you're uninstalling after every uninstall. No real idea aside from that.

    My PC is setup pretty much like yours Haze, except I have CCleaner installed to keep the registry cleaned out and fix issues. The intermittent connectivity issues is probably ISP or router related.

    commercial: NOD32(lightest) & Kaspersky(heaviest)
    freeware: Antivir, AVG, Avast
    The best as in: best heuristic (finding new viruses which aren't in the database) best detection rate (finding most viruses by database)
    As said, common sense really takes care of most viruses.

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Spyware Catcher<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    Spybot Search & Destroy (provides an immunize option, and can scan on demand)
    I don't really trust ad-aware anymore, since I vaguely recall them being in the boat with spyware folks, and the fact that there are pro and plus versions(?)
    Haven't had spyware/malware since I've started using mozilla firefox + adblock plus.

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Defragmenting Program<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    JkDefrag (uses Windows defrag API, but is way smarter and has a bunch of useful features)

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Clutter on the Computer<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    CCleaner (provides regcleaning, uninstall and startup managing)

    Are you (or someone else the same internet connection) torrenting? Bittorrent is quite aggresive on connections, which routers doesn't like.

    Sorry to be a nitpick, but you do mean O&O Defrag no?

    Microsoft's defragmentation is fine, now. Unless you're using something older than XP, the only reason to get a custom program is for more options.

    CCleaner for general rubbish cleaning.

    Old Sygate Personal Firewall (discontinued)

    Right, sorry, was at 9 am. I usually go to sleep at 4.00 and get up at 7.00. My first few hours I'm more asleep than awake.

    Thanks for the replies. I'll go download said programs and see what happens. Recently found a virus on my computer that kept evading AVG for some reason and nuked it into oblivion, so I'm happy.

    Think NOD32 is worth the money?

    I'm actually starting to think it is. It is very lightweight and it just sits in my tray like it isnt there.

    I think the only other antivirus ive used is AVG, apart from many moons ago when Norton was the only thing on the planet, and it just feels so much better then AVG. I hate how AVG always wants to update the moment you turn on the PC and comes with all these update windows and crap, slowing the boot process even further. NOD32 however just loads quietly with it's little green tray icon and you never know when it updates because sometime during the day, all you get is a little transparent window fading in saying, databse updated. And thats it.

    It also scans quick and as i have no virus infected files that i know of, i cant really know if it's good at finding viruses or not. But i'm guessing it's no worse then others.

    I have to say the main selling point is how discrete and un-obtrusive it is.
