Why not take the idea of aliens wiping out colonies and make another game mode / map type for this:
Marines receive a stress beacon from a remote colony that aliens have been spotted on the facility, and the remaining citizens (5-12) have locked themselves secure in a safe-room.
the marines phase in to the room and are now tasked with the duty of protecting the citizens for X amount of time before the drop ship can phase them back up (or come and collect them from an LZ?)
so now its like a VIP / Assault game type, aliens have to kill everyone of the VIPs, marines have to protect them and possibly get them to a safe area.
points per VIP safely departed, round based?
marines have a limited tech-tree, perhaps start with motion tracking and start with 2/3 resource nodes in the safe-room, while aliens are free to capture the whole map. the used of weldable doors and such would promote a scout-party of marines to seal off a route from flank-attacks while a couple of marines stay in teh safe-room with the VIPs to defend them, when the scout party is done securing a route the trek to the LZ can begin
VIPs will sprint back to the safe-room if a marine dies (to prevent CS-style lameplay)

Marines just need nodes to tech, but I think that aliens are to fast for this to be a effective play style, although it could be really really fun! It would take alot of balancing but it is far from impossible.
