I am the CAKE MASTER! That last adv. level was a ###### before I figured out you could <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>drop the camera on the rightmost turret and yourself on the others by jumping up on that arm on the left</span>.

Also, I recently found out that my GeForce 4MX is only DirectX 7 capable, so now I have to spend a rather significant amount of extra cash to play portal. It better ######ing be worth it.

Edit: Ok, turns out a new card is only going to run me about $30, bringing the combined total up to $50, which I probably would have paid for portal anyway.

Some tips you might find useful in the bonus levels:

-When you do a high horizontal jump and afterwards you cannot go on, repeat that jump and look for platforms you might be able to shoot portals at.

-Distance. Sometimes you need to place two portals so far from each other that you cannot see both at the same time.

-Momentum abuse: Place one portal above and one below you. Now jump through them. After 10 seconds you will have maximum momentum. Use this to make extremely long horizontal jumps.

-Boxes can be used for stacking to cross obstackles.

-Boxes deflect combine balls.

-Alignment: Make sure you align your portals correctly or your view will skip when you pass through them, making shooting another portal nearly impossible.

-Cake: Always have one ready, in case you feel frustrated <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

Edit: And if everything fails: noclip and have a look at that level from every angle possible. Sometimes it is nearly impossible to see that tiny patch of normal wall, you can shoot a portal at

Level 18 advanced has me completely stumped:

I'm stuck at the same damn spot, I don't see any possible way of getting up.

ok im stuck, i think im in an advanced lvl because it said in the corned "advanced cake something"

after lvl 19.. ive gone through like 5 or 6 preloads after 19.. and im now stumped.

<span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>I am up to a part where you end up in a hallway full of sludge, you get up to the top and are ambushed by many sentry's i did all that, got to the top platform, killed the two additional sentry's there.. and i cant find a way up through the opening they were dropped from... </span>

I beat the game and did all the advanced levels, but I think I'll probably keep away from the challenges or I'll lose my mind =d

So now I'm trying to just play the game. I tried starting up Portals, and I got the error "Failed to create D3D device!" I did a little bit of google searching, and I discovered the program dxdiag, which I ran. It says that Direct3D acceleration is enabled. I used the Test Direct3D button, and got these errors:

Direct3D 7 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x80004005 (Generic failure)
Direct3D 8 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x8876086c (error code)
Direct3D 9 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x8876086c (error code)

My graphics card is a Radeon 9600xt. Any help?

Edit: After more google searching, it turns out that the problem is the Catalyst 7.9 drivers. I downgraded, and it's working now.

This game also showed me that only two speakers of mine still work, out of a 5.1 speaker system. Probably due to me leaving them connected while changing settings, contrary to the sound manager's instructions. Once I figured that out, I was able to turn off closed captioning.

I had exactly the same problem (same video card too). Went back down to 7.7 and things seem to work. I read on the Steam forums that Valve was talking to ATI about it.

Has anyone done the Terminal Velocity Achievement? The one which you have to fall 30,000 feet. How long do you have to fall into an infinite loop to do it?
