But GLaDOS told us we needed to keep it safe! Something could have happened to it!

It was mostly, as SkulkBait said, just due to the writing.
SkulkBait, I think your explanation is actually quite accurate.

In the developer commentary it said that if they didn't have the incinerator, players would try to lug the cube around for the rest of the game, and as you say Liku, even that was the case there would likely have been even more widespread Companion Cube craziness.

Weighted Companion Cube may be a title, but since we only see one in the entire game and GLaDOS refers only to that one, it becomes a name which we refer to it by.
<span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>At the end of the game when GLaDOS says she invited the Companion Cube etc, you don't have any confusion about what she is talking about. If on the other hand she said "non-descript box", well there are many of those in the game and you wouldn't know which she was talking about</span>

as a note, you could NOT have taken the cube with you as anything that goes through that fizzle field is destroyed.

I only ran into a few cases where I could do this.

One of them was the <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>Android training course</span> where the last turret was just before the field, you could carry it through with you <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> (do it, it is amusing).

Personally I would have liked the idea of having people unwittingly carry the cube through the fizzle field. However, as they pointed out, the incinerator was training for latter on.

I did it with the cameras quite often after I detached them from the walls. I also liked dropping them into the toxic waste that was usually nearby.

I wonder how the writing for the game was done. Did they design the levels and general idea of the game, and then tell the writer(s) to play it and go to town in writing the narration as they played? Seems like that's how it went.

That was, as per standards, wonderful.

    BTW, I am serious, go toss a turret through a fizzle field <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

why stop at one? Gather all of them and toss them through.
  • XythXyth Avatar Join Date: 2003-11-04 Member: 22312Members
You can use those turrets to weigh down buttons actually, that would make puzzle 18 really easy...
  • GwahirGwahir Join Date: 2002-04-24 Member: 513Members, Constellation
I could see a really annoying achievement where almost all the fizzle fields are removed and you have to get every cube and turret into GLaDOS's room. I wouldn't go for it myself, but there are people who would.

We need portal speed runs now. A few of the puzzles can be almost entirely skipped if you know what you're doing. I wish my laptop could play it, I was able to finish both EP2 and Portal while at home for my 3 day fall break, but now Im back at college and without a decent computer. Woe is I.

talking about speed runs, is it possible to somehow skip the 20 second delay at the beginning of the turret level before the door opens? Yes or no will do, no need to explain how if it is possible.

    Wow...he couldn't say anything bad.

I think Portal IS the greatest game ever, perhaps. For the masses, I mean. This could be the best game in the history of games for mainstream, if he can't find a negative at all.

Good news! I just got my video card back from the manufacturers. Or more accurately, the manufactures just replaced the rusty-mess-of-a-video-card that I sent them with a brand spanking new one that actually works! I can stop using the piece of ass replacement that I've got in there, and swap my new one back in, and finally play PORTAL!

Oh, yeah. And TF2 and Half life episode 2. I guess. I mean, when I get bored with portal I mean.

    **edit**

You guys are not going ****ing to believe this.

So I plug in my shiny new graphics card excitedly, eager to play Portal.

I turn the computer on to the smell of molten plastic and also fire and sparks.

I then turn the switch at the back of the computer off with a newfound intensity for hitting switches.

It is at this point that I am quite upset.

I was oh-so looking forward to playing Portal with a vigor reserved only for those games considered perfect by everybody ever to talk about the game.

I was oh-so looking forward to 1600x1200 8x AA, 8x AF with all the 'fixens turned to "eye-bleedingly good".

It is at this point that I am about to write a creatively worded letter to the nice customer service people at EVGA, to kindly ask them when they will be paying me for the shipping costs of the nice piece of burnt plastic that they shipped me in place of the broken one that I had sent them, fully expecting a NON-BROKEN ONE in return.

I wonder though, could this have been my fault? And if it was, how do I get EVGA to not know this fact, and ship me another working card that this time I won't melt?

    OR

Did they ship me a dud? If so, how would be the best way of asking them to pay for the shipping of a new one.

The thing is, if Yahtzee ridicules all games we won't be able to tell which ones we should actually, ihho, be playing. I think -of all recent games- Portal is definitely the one upon which he should rightly have bestowed his rare words of praise.

It's the only game where my hairs have actually stood up on my back (when I first watched myself entering and simultaneously exiting the first portal) and where I have got to the end and just welled up with fulfilment and satisfaction. I think that comes largely from Valve's "or is it?" endings that have left me wanting for some sort of epic closure (and if ASCII kareoke is thrown in as a bonus, that's fine by me).

Haha that is awesome. I've heard some of this guy's stuff before... he couldn't think of anything to complain about with portal. Sick.

I don't think it could have been your fault. The power connectors are standardized so if you plugged in your card and had done something wrong (like your psu not being able to handle the load, or forgot to plug it in) your card would simply not have worked due to lack of power, not exploded.

That said I wouldn't write them a mean letter, just one stating the fireworks you saw and requesting a new card. The place you bought it from should take it back. I know newegg does, although you have to pay for shipping.
