Moving to America
<div class="IPBDescription">Atleast, I'd like to.</div>Self explanitory topic. So why might you ask? Living in the UK is pretty expensive, boring and overall it's becoming a worse place. I'd also like a change of scenery and I thought an English speaking country, thought America.
Not sure if anyone can help me with this but I just thought I'd ask as this is one of the options I'm looking at. I'm not really clued up on VISA's and such. Obviously if I move I will take some start up capital with me and would ideally like to have lined up some sort of work, my problem is what can I get and/or obtain without being "college-level" (Degree's and such) trained? Is that likely to hinder me from being able to gain a working VISA too?
I'll get reading on my own and researching it further too but if anyone could offer assistance, it's appreciated <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Any idea what part of the country you want to move to?
Not overly fussed on area in America although at the moment I'd settle for more or less anywhere I could go.
If I knew that the job prospects in the U.S. health section were good and I found out how to untangle the red tape needed to make the move, I'd be over there come the new year.

You're probably almost immedietely eligible for a permanent working Visa as long as you find an employer because of your degree. For someone like me it's not as simple. That's my backup plan for 2 years time as the company I work for has companies in Australia who are constantly recruiting from the UK. So hit me up in 2 years time, tell me your location and I'm there <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
EDIT: Infact I'll e-mail BankWest now and see how long I have to have worked for our parent company before I'm eligible to do so, no harm in asking.

US has just as many jerks/######bags as any other country, they are just more concentrated in a specific area.
If you really do end up moving here, stay away from things generally below NC (and it's pretty iffy here as well). Don't live too close to DC, because living expenses are stupidly high (Though there are lots of good jobs around).
Anyway, the US is pretty nice, atleast when you aren't having your constitutional rights walked all over.
Have you ever BEEN to America? You know they have <i>swarms</i> of homeless people on street corners right? I've been to seattle. Street bums everywhere.
Also the fact that guns make people die, and America has a lot of guns. Ever think of that? No!
Honestly just crawl into a hole and make no human contact for the next 80 years. That will teach them.

I am pretty sure he is referring to them being the cause of the increasing number of homeless people. I can only hope this is one of your common undetectable sarcasm-filled posts.
That's not to say that you can't do better, as I know several people who did <i>not</i> get degrees and still make a good sum of money... it just took them a good while to get to that point, and sometimes it can be difficult to break out of a poor financial situation.

Yah, that is a big one.
I don't have a degree, and the best prospects for me are slightly above minimum wage working for the city. It isn't bad, but it isn't great. then again, I live in NYC, minimum wage != cost of living by any chance.
However, I will bring up a sorta big problem for you (the same one our last NSOT member who wanted to move here ran into).
Visa.
If you are not going to come as a student, kiss the easy way good bye. Now you have 2 chances, however, unless your job wants to transfer you over (and you are a manager, or have specific work skills they can prove they need), you are SOL on the work visa, which leaves you with the green card lottery.
Basically, you have to have completed 12 years of education (dono how an AS fits into that) and have 2 years work experience.
Seriously, good luck, I hope it works out for you, and if you do end up in the NYC area let me know and I will buy you a pint.
(side note, I am quasi familiar with all of this stuff from working with a number of Indians, if you wana get the real low down I think you want to visit the American embassy near where you live)

Erm... Have you been to England? It's completely messed up- ironically, because of immigration. Immigrants aren't pushed/rewarded for learning our language, it's not uncommom to see traffic signs in Polish only in my rural county of Shropshire or to have Asian-only or Eastern European-only communites. The segregation is so bad that it can be pretty intimmidating in some areas because I'm a white Brit.

Sounds like a Microbiology degree to me.
Lots of room for that over here, or you could tack on another 2-4 years for your Masters/Doctorate and teach.

90% of the polish people in my area work which is a higher percentage than the English people who work in my area. Ironically of the 1% of the black community in my area, I haven't seen any of them at the social office signing on, infact alot of them come in where I work. So I'd blame it on people misrepresenting immigrants and being lazy idle arses, the English suck... (and I'm English).

Louisville is actually pretty nice. Jobs are easy to come by, living expenses are affordable for a metropolis, and culture here seems pretty diverse.
I kind of suggest living just outside the city though, so you dont have all the useless laws like no firing firearms in city limits and stuff.
