Game Types

<div class="IPBDescription">Classic, seige, combat, custom</div>Im sure its written somewhere in the about section or another area of this site that you will be able to create full costomise game types.

I was woundering what types of games ppl would come up with and how this kind of customisation would work.

At the moment in ns 1. theres Classic, combat, siege, marine vs marine, and i dont know whether alien vs alien ever got created but it might have Classic is what made ns so successful in my opinon because it gave tactical diversity and i dont think this idea needs too many radical changes in ns2. the other types all served their perposes fairly well but could do with some major overhalls and changes simply because there are other shooters that do them better. Marine vs marine feels like a lame verson of TF. Combat seems rather like many shooting games/ bar the content of the aliens.

I think combat maps could be developed in to somwthing unique. And because they i assume r less central to the competitive gaming community theres more room for trial and error. Several thread have discussed risky ideas like new alien classes, and weapons etc that cud be used in combat style maps more liberally.

Combat style maps couls be made more objective based, which is what i assume the customisation is about

Discuss?

adding objectives to a COMBAT game-type sounds a bit backwards :>

There is one Alien vs. Alien server out there, it's always full of a few people. I don't know if you could really dd a new gametype without changing the game ALOT. Already, even though yit's labeled "classic", it already has objectives. Resnodes, hives, locking down areas. I'm not too sure how you would add an objective type game, other then maybe changing it from securing res nodes for res, to something more like getting an extraction point or moving object A, to point B. That is very possible.

Maybe you could have some sort of thing where the marines have to find a flight recorder box, or a special technology thing, then carry it to somewhere without the aliens killing them. It would allow for battles to move from one opart of the map through to the "end", changing where you fight the entire time, and how you approach the marines the whole time too. I could see them starting out on a ship, then they move to where the box is located, after obtaining the box they must take it to the extraction point. Along the way they can pickup weps and maybe even mix in some combat elements where they get upgrades from their kills along the way?], but as they progress along the map they will pickup weapons, open storage closets with ammo and "instant upgrades."

They could reach certain points, where say a phase tech teleportes is located. By reaching that point ansd welding it open, the spaceship [outside of map] can send them shotguns. Now they progress to the next point with nades and shotguns. When they reach this point they have to download the data to the flight recorder, after recieving this they get upgrades for movement by "activating" the computer terminal. Now they progress to the third point where they are givenheavy weps and armor and such, by this time the aliens have progressed as well to ONOS, fades and third hive abilities. So the fight moves with both sides being "fully loaded" to the pickup ship awaiting.

Where they get upgrades and how the aliens progress could be done by either time, so they cannot just go fade and beat on the rines at begining of map; however, the marines if they sit at a point too long and say camp the hell out of the ammo closet, then the fades will become a reality and they are in trouble. It would force the marines to keep moving and the aliens to push them back as hard as possible, so they don't reach their next objective [upgradable point].

Any takers? Everything could be changed or modified, but this way it would be doable even probably with NS1, and still change how the game plays out. Instead of also anyone killing anyone too, it forces the marines to use teamwork just a little since one must be "using the objective" while others are covering for him. Also, it makes movement a priority to a point, so no camping. Campers lose every time! In fact I love this idea, if they don't go for it, I might just make this! hehe No ######.

I think this kind of story based objectives game play could work well as an a development from combat maps. I think combats fufil their role of being simple acessable and less time consuming than other modes, but at the momment theyre dull in my opinion. If story based objectives were added rather than just running towards hive/comm chair to destroy it wud be cool in my opinion. Any objectives wud hav to be fairly simple to keep the game play accessable to new players and it would have to remain quick intense action to make it a real alternative type of game to classic.

I think if i could do a custom game play type, it would be similar corpsman's, but with a TF2 twist, you see how dustbowl and such do the objective win lose same map tug of war.

similar to that but think long twisting lvls on a sort of combat system, Marines start at one end with not much to no XP, kharaa start with complete access to chew down a com chair - 2 or some such, to get a bit of starting xp. the objective for the rines is to get to the old maintenance com chair on the other side of the map or they are doomed to die. *note at this point all kharaa can frenzy and try to get some xp, or one or two kharaa can get a lvl or two.

from their the doors open and rines have to run a semi gauntlet, any kills they achieve they retain some XP, if they make it thru the gauntlet weld the door open, weld it closed, weld the vents closed, it jumps to the next part of the map, the winning side gets two lvls the losing side gets one lvl, basically after 6-8 gauntlets your all close to max life form / upgrades, yet it wont turn into a camp fest, like 50+ lvl co, as its only one more run to the CC, each, section of the map is a sudden death like mode one life like CS a round, no pushing back and fourth only pushing forwards. The key to it would be lots of vents and not many long strait corridors, basically a game of pony express/British bulldogs.

to make it more like pony express once the entire set of gauntlets have been ran the teams auto swap, to make it more like British bull dogs a nice twist can be added, basically if a kharaa kills you become a kharaa, and they become a marine, which is why theres a 15 second weld/ upgrade timer at the beginning of each gauntlet section. the moment door opens its a free for all.

A twisted sense of urgency could be added with a gang up tiggy notion, basically marines only win and gain upgrades if they make it to 1 2 3 home base, but kharaa gain lvls based on kills, when you die you instantly respawn as a kharaa up in the safety of the rafters with your current kharaa xp and last known upgrades, the first two too - three / depending on numbers 1:3 ratio that die as a marine are flagged as the starting kharaa for the next section of the gauntlet, and immediately start a new section of the gauntlet with two bonus xp lvls on their kharaa bar.

welders will be spread thru out the map, but i can see the welder unlock will be one of the most urgent, other wise you may have to go back thru the gauntlet looking for little jonneys welder he dropped when he died, note a upgraded welder shouldn't drop on death but a picked up welder should if its all with in the constraints of the map.

actually this could be done now in a large long twisting CO map, with single path linear play.

as i am pretty sure kharaa and marine spawn's don't need to be with in X distance of the CC or hive. tho i don't quite know how redemption would work, but a series of kharaa access only fields to the kharaa spawn which is not located near the hive.

and a series of weld doors that open and unlock phase gates, and lock previous parts of the map, in which case it would be useless for kharaa to go to that part of the map and completely unaccessible for marines once the next section is unlocked the final weld door gets marines into the CC room and lets them free for all on the hive. would need a pretty tiet map timer tho, or kharaa would never win. obviously if you get sealed in a area you shouldn't be in type /kill

I might go have a crack at a square block wolfenstine 3d type quality lvl today see if its possable, still i wouldnt know how to get a weld point to activate multiple triggers or things, but ill work that out also.

Sounds really interesting. The only part I fear is vents... I like them being a said way into an area, or a way to sneak around certain parts of maps, but I don't like having to sit in them too much. I don't know if I would want to spend the whole map in a vent. Is that what you meant? Or just welding them shut, but walking aruond open areas?

hum you would need to see it corpsie, basicly you have a alien only access duct, up above tottaly free from marines they cant get in there due to the race spersific push clip *kharra spawn is in here. under that duct is another alien cowardinate highway duct, most of this ducting is built for low life forms but one main big path for onos with servral drop out access points. it has vents spiraling and twisting every were to get to all parts of the main tunnel below this duct which the marines run thru*these are detailed like normal ship decks, obiously with the freeish movment the kharaa have in the overhead duct, limited even for jp's, the kharaa can get to any part of said bit of gauntlet. if you wanna jump out of you safty of your vent feel free, be it a bend or two ahead of the gun fire or right on a marines head.

I guess I need to see what you are talking about, but it sounds like giving each side unrestricted movement in/out of the hive. This I suppose would change the way things are done, often I don't make it out because the JPers are incoming to hive and I am lowly skulk so I usually die. I see this I guess as having some plus sides, but I guess we would have to play some maps with it, to see what the effects are.
