<div class="IPBDescription">Can I play NS2 on my comp?</div>I am a HUGE fan of NS and I hope NS2 will be just as awesome or better

My problem is I don't know if my comp can run NS2. I have DirectX 7 on here but I don't know the specs for my comp (RAM, processor)

How can I find out?

Can you play HL2 or episode 1 ? if it runs ok chances are you will be able to play ns2

    to check what you have:
    (assuming you have winXP)
    click <b><u>start menu</u></b>
    select <b><u>Run</u></b> (or hit <b><u>windows key + R</u></b>)
    then type <b><u>dxdiag</u></b>
    Click <u><b>OK/Run</b></u>
That might take a few minutes to gather all the info and then it might ask you about some WHQL files, but just click <b><u>NO</u></b>.
Then in the <b><u>System tab</u></b>, you can see how much ram and what processor you have.
Then in the <b><u>Display tab</u></b>, you can see what type of video card you have and how much memory its got.
You can also hit the <b><u>Sound tab</u></b> to see what sound card you have, but its not so important unless you are really into your sound - i am so i forked out a $100 on the latest creative x-fi, and its amazing <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

also the official FAQ states (about 1/2 way down) what requirements there will be <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/faq" target="_blank">http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/faq</a>

"We're currently thinking the same as HL2 : Episode 1. That is: 1.2 GHz Processor, 256MB RAM, DirectX 7 level graphics card, Windows 2000/XP/ME/98, Mouse, Keyboard, Internet Connection"
    </i>

as you can see they aren't terribly high - a pc 3 - 4 years old would be able to run it - but of course if you want the best experience possible i'd be saying you want double the ghz, quadroople the ram, and a dx9 video card with atleast 256mbs or ram. on it.

You can get a PC that will run hl2 amazingly well for like $600-700 AUD if you have a mate that can put it together for you.

    wait wait - 502mb ram ?

Sounds like you might have an onboard video card? they usually aren't so good for playing games on. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

That or he dropped one of his sticks of RAM one day and part of it broke off.

DX7 is not good...it well run Source but it well have very low FPS and the graphics well be really crappy...if you can get a DX9/ DX10 card.

Don't worry about it too much. Honestly, it'll be a while before NS2 will be complete and released. By that time, the cost of hardware to run HL2 shouldn't be too expensive.

i would defenitely worry if i had a DX7 hardware card tbh, especially using source.
with dys dev, we had quite a few problems creating shaders to support dx8 that sometimes needed to do things normal shaders wouldnt. support for them didnt really come until a bit later.
you can find a good dx9 card for pretty cheap, but alas, this is source you'll be dealing with.

I would buy that extra stick/replace the RAM before the video card. DDR is super cheap now that DDR2 and DDR3 are out and a gig of RAM makes all the difference over 512.

A console command (can't remember what it was) can force a Source game to use DX7 for example. When you do that graphical glory will be gone but it works as far as I know. And by the way, loading times might increase - a lot. But I too suggest that you buy a newer video card since they're pretty cheap these days.
