Strategy Enhancement
What I loved about the early days of ns was the way different strategies evolved as players became familiar with new tactics etc. This tended to die off slowly, sure new tactics were still developed but they were more like variations on a theme. I seen the idea somewhere in here about aliens having more upgrade chambers than they can use in one game resulting in a larger variety of possible chamber combinations instead of just MC DC SC every game. I think the idea was something like 5 chambers. Anyway while this is a great idea IMO it leaves all the variety on the alien side while the marines are still stuck with jpacs and HA. I propose that the marines also have a research tree allowing them say three options or a mix of two something like that. That way the developing strategies would be many times more complex, numerous and interesting. One particular thing I like about this is the increased need for reconnaissance by both sides to try and uncover the paths chosen by the enemy.
One problem I do see though is balancing all this, it would need a fair bit of tweaking for sometime after release but it would be heaps of fun.

Maybe marines in the protolab, could upgrade Jetpacks or Armor,
but you have to pick two of four sub-types for them to upgrade
ie.
Jetpacks could have
Extra Fuel
Extra Power (faster fuel use, faster lift)
More armor (faster fuel use, slower lift)
Less armor (much slower fuel use, faster lift)
Heavy Armor could have
Nano Armor (like in custom, but it heals ONE armor a second - not much)
Defence Stance (ducking increases armor absorption - cant move)
Ammo Storage (can hold more clips (2 more for hmg) and faster reload? )
Laser Pointer (increased accuracy (great for hmg), scares teh ###### out of aliens seeing 10 lasers! but gives away position)
