It's Metroid Prime 3 Time!

Picked it up today, sorta on a whim, since I rarely get a game at launch... started playing on Veteran difficulty and just beat the first boss - it wasn't exactly hard per se, but it was TEDIOUS how many times I had to shoot it, so I think I'm gonna just restart on normal difficulty... I have enough ADD that I shouldn't do anything to make a game more tedious...

but anyway, as for the game itself - it really is just like Prime 1 but with slightly better controls. I like that I don't just shoot straight ahead where my cursor is pointing, but I *don't* like that I don't shoot straight at a bad guy when locked on... I hope this game doesn't have as much backtracking as 1 did - that totally killed it for me... and I didn't even play 2 =x but I'm rambling now. Please, talk amongst yourselves and discuss the game.

I've always liked that Metroid music. Good stuff.

Can't comment on the game, of course, because I don't have a Wii or anything like that, but I hear (from Kotaku) that the controls are really well done. I'm a PC gamer at heart but the Wii is the only console I can ever imagine where a first person shooter might not only work, but work even better than a mouse/keyboard.

You hope there's no Backtracking!? That's all Metroid was.

God yes. This just reinforces the fact I need to get a Wii. Soon... I will have it...

Some of the reviews say MP3 is more of the same; some of the reviews have this down as a bad thing, heh. I suppose it'll get repetitive eventually, though, so it's good that part 3 will be the last in this arc. I hope this one has more cool gadgets I haven't seen before.

So, should we use this thread to speculate how the next Metroid game for Wii will be?

The Metroid games I enjoyed most were the nice old-fashioned 2D ones. Super Metroid, Metroid 2 (GB), and Metroid Fusion (GBA). I wish game developers didn't feel forced to make all games 3D these days... sadly, I doubt there will ever be a new official 2D metroid <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

Except Guild Wars. Arenanet/NCsoft know how to do a simultaneous worldwide release.
  • TychoCelchuuuTychoCelchuuu Anememone Join Date: 2002-03-23 Member: 345Members
Pirates of the Burning Sea is also going for simultaneous worldwide release I believe.

    I figured that out like right after I posted that <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/nerd-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::nerdy::" border="0" alt="nerd-fix.gif" /> ironically enough, the free aim when locked on grew on me, so I'm not disabling it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

i gotta say i've been waiting for this game to come out for ages, infact it was the reason i bought the wii, and yet now that i have played it, its a bit meh. might be just me having played bioshock and all recently.
The graphics are quite good, very nice art style too, and its got a super smooth frame rate.

It just feels a little childish, which i guess being a game on wii i should have expected lol

I've never liked the wii fps controls, i have to say that metroid is the best version yet - but compared to resident evil 4's system it is pretty frustrating and wrist hurting.
in RE4 you can't strafe instead the thumbstick turns the view allow the wii mote cursor to freely shoot anywhere you like with out the view spinning uncontrollably.

now that you mention it, it does feel somewhat childish, but I don't mind it. I think that's pretty much Metroid in a nutshell, we just never realized it before because we grew up while the franchise stayed young like Peter Pan =p it's a somewhat cartoonish/toyish but fun shooter.

I didn't play RE4 on the Wii, but I have to say I hate first person games that don't let you strafe, so I'm loving MP3 on that front. I think you can set your sensitivity to 3 different options. 'advanced' has your screen pretty much always moving toward your cursor, 'normal' has your screen only move when you move the cursor toward the edge, and I'm not sure how 'basic' works, because once I tried 'advanced' I stuck with it.

I played Metroid Prime 3 at my friend's house and the controls really suck you in. I was hooked, but pressing B to jump is funny... a trigger to jump and button to shoot? Uhhh... hmm... switch please?

I managed to beat the 5th or so boss on my first try, while my friend(who owns the game) is currently stuck on him.

I'm sorely disappointed that the Wii isn't much more powerful than the GameCube, this game's graphics are pretty dated. Beautiful are style, but nothing on the Wii looks next-gen and I nothing probably will ever look next-gen.
  • DiscoZombieDiscoZombie Join Date: 2003-08-05 Member: 18951Members
you can switch jump + shoot in the options, but once I tried it I realized I liked the default better anyway (just like with the lock-on free aim).

I don't mind the dated graphics, but there's some pretty annoying load times between rooms... you shoot a door and it doesn't open for like 15 seconds because the next room is loading -_-
  • LikuLiku I, am the Somberlain. Join Date: 2003-01-10 Member: 12128Members
My friend never mentioned being able to switch... ######!

Some of the load times are really long, I remember a few times I though the game froze or I didn't shoot the door.

I can't wait for a speed run of the game, but first I'll have to go through it myself and without a Wii that won't happen soon.

I'm up to the endgame scavenger hunt we all know and love/hate from previous metroid games... I may or may not finish the game. it was the endgame scavenger hunt in Prime 1 that bored me too much to finish it... but anyway, the boss fights have been a lot of fun. it's great figuring out the tricks to the different bosses, and simply fighting them is fun too. I wish the grapple sensitivity was more responsive. it seems like the only truly reliable part of the wii control scheme is the light gun.

<span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>I have to say, the weapons and abilities sorta disappoint. Everything feels underpowered. The screw attack is one of the earlier powerups, and it's really unwieldy and impractical. I miss the days when it was one of the last powerups and it let you glide through all opposition with ease. the different beams feel identical with different dye jobs. I want my combined ice/plasma/wave beam! I like the addition of the command visor, but using it is pretty rare so it's more of a gimmick. using the x-ray visor to 1 shot pirate commandos is rad, albeit situational</span>

anyway, all in all it's a fun game =p anyone wanna trade friend vouchers? pm me your friend code =p
  • ShzarShzar Join Date: 2003-09-21 Member: 21098Members, Constellation
I just finished the game myself. Ripping good fun the whole way through. I got 88% over about 12 hours, and I suppose I could say that that is too short, but it was on normal difficulty and I can certainly see myself playing it again, whereas Prime 2 left me feeling rather nonplussed. The fetch quest at the end didn't bother me at all because I found most of the objects (all but one, in fact) just in the normal course of exploring and having fun.

<span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>I felt the game to be challenging enough. Some of the bosses really made me work for it, though the last guy was unimpressive. Neat final area, though; the whole corruption thing made me quite nervous. I do wish they kept the beams separate, but I liked the addition of hypermode.</span>

PM me all your Wii friend codes too so I can unlock some sweet sweet bonuses <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />
