Overlord
<div class="IPBDescription">Muahaahaa! (56k beware)</div>I had a nice long beautifully written post singing the praises of this game, and then firefox decided to crash on me because I dared to preview my post first, so here's the abridged version.
If you liked Evil Genius or Dungeon keeper, you'll probably like this. You get to have an evil tower, evil minions, cast evil spells, and did I mention the evil? You start with your tower ruined, your minions scattered, and work your way up from there. The repairs on my tower are all done, and so without further ado I invite you to a visual tour of my evil tower in its present state.
<img src="http://img164.imageshack.us/img164/6746/overlord1xi4.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />
My evil throne room. Note the newly installed banners, newly captured servant girls, and newly laid-out jester sprawled on the floor. He makes a very satisfying sound when you kick him, and gives you ample provocation to do so. This time he called me Overlard.
<img src="http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/9052/overlordrichestv9.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />
My evil riches. I probably need to work on the evil riches.
<img src="http://img395.imageshack.us/img395/3483/overlordhqlq8.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />
My evil inner sanctum, complete with rotating runes around a pedestal holding a miniature model of my tower. Because you need one of those.
<img src="http://img365.imageshack.us/img365/6796/overlordforgenz1.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />
My evil forge where I forge... evil. You do so by using minion's life-force to upgrade your weapons. I assume there are multiple metal types, but steel is all I have access to right now. Incidentally this is what happened when I used 100 minions to upgrade my helmet:
<img src="http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/3131/100minionsbh0.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />
Yes, you get to see all 100 of them gleefully throw themselves into the molten soup.
More praises of this game to go here when I'm less tired of typing.
Anyone else pick this up yet?

Gotta love the jester: "Gluttonous Overlard!" *thump*
I just blew all my gold buying cosmetic improvements for my castle. It's got big menacing spikes on the side now. The control scheme does seem to be made for consoles first, with mouse support tacked on later. It's passable, no more.

The pc demo that came with my gaming mag had me buy the 360 version, I'm not far into the game yet, just got blues. Fun game, but I'm not playing it too much or I'll get bored of it. I absolutely <i>love</i> how the minions offer items to you when they find them ;D "for you" "for the overlord" "for the master"
when I first heard of it, I threw it aside, thinking it was just a couple of gimmicks. But it sounds hella fun.
I played the demo
it runs like poo on my computer.
I really should just upgrade my comp or buy a 360, or or the other.
Servant girls!? This game has EVERYTHING! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":0" border="0" alt="wow.gif" />

Yes it does, it even has Starforce, how nice of them to include it.

.... dammit.
Well that's not good. I guess this game really <i>is</i> evil through and through.
If it helps, you can remove starforce <a href="http://www.glop.org/starforce/" target="_blank">here</a> and I do apologise for not having noticed it before. Now i'm pissed. I just hope the game still runs after I remove SF... I guess the only consolation I can offer is that this'll be a newer version of starforce which, while still evil, <i>probably</i> won't rape your puter in the same way the older versions did.
Back to the topic at hand though... now that i've discouraged everyone from buying what is otherwise a decent game... I can see how it could get kind of samey after a while, so I too am trying not to play it too much in one go as it were.
*edit* Well it seems the version i'm "infected" with is 4.0, wheas 3.0 is the version which became infamous for breaking puters. Whether this version does the same... I don't wish to find out. Removing now.
*double edit* I can confirm that with the use of the removal tool <a href="http://www.glop.org/starforce/" target="_blank">here</a> the game will run fine Starforce-free.
for the general game, I use 5 of each color and the rest Browns. Right now that means 5 red/green/blue and 23 browns. for the arena, I usually use about 7 blues and the rest browns. Really, browns are the most durable and do the most damage too - it's sad really. reds almost always miss their target with their fireballs, and greens have to be set up beforehand to be able to do decent damage - and even then they don't really out-DPS browns. and blues, well, the ressing is nice, but they usually end up dying first anyway, or dying when they go in and try to rescue another dead minion... and it's not uncommon to have all 15 of my non-browns die in one AoE attack because browns are the only minions with a respectable number of HPs...
that's definitely my biggest complaint with the game. the type of minion you start out with is the only truly useful one throughout the game...
Game: "GO BE EVIL, TERRORIZE THE HUMANS"
You: "Sure!"
<later>
Game: "NOW PROTECT THE HUMANS"
You: "...okay?"
<!--QuoteBegin-"Anonymous"+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE("Anonymous")</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->More like Neutral Overlord in the end.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Izzat true?
So I heard from Anonymous that the game is all
Game: "GO BE EVIL, TERRORIZE THE HUMANS"
You: "Sure!"
<later>
Game: "NOW PROTECT THE HUMANS"
You: "...okay?"
Izzat true?

I find myself helping people a lot, but that is mostly because I feel sorry for the poor peasants. I fed some elves to a giant slug though... Now the jester calls me "fattener of slugs".
Again, were did you find the servant girls? I think I missed them.
Izzat true?
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I think you need to look at the big picture:
If you simply kill off all humans, then there is noone who can fear you <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
But yeah, during the game you fight corrupted heroes and the end boss is an even bigger evil than you are.
So: <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />

My first servant was a sacrifice to get me to stop killing the villagers. You probably just have to rough up those villagers past a certain point.
Once you've killed a sufficient number of peasants in Spree, the village will become "suppressed" (you get a message informing you as such) and you gain some corruption. The next time you enter Mellow Valley after this, the servant girl quest will begin. Completion will net you yet more corruption, and of course the servant girls.
despite how I nay-sayed the game earlier, I'm actually tempted to play it through again with 100% corruption now <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
some advice: when forging weapons, go with the sword, and put some hefty knockback on it. some mobs can't be knocked back, but the ones that can are pwned by it. a monster that's knocked back can't hurt you or your minions and lies helplessly on the ground til slaughtered... and with large, fast, sweeping sword strikes, you can knock down a full squad of baddies for your minions to kill with one swipe. plus the swords are glowy and cool looking.

Man, it seems like there's a growing number of people afraid to get into the role. Playing as one side, then completely the other. I've noticed this happening around me for KOTOR, B&W, Fable, and now this.
Why restrict your gameplay?
Why did I save and feed the peasants? Because I need people to oppress.
Why did I later start killing them? Because they had a problem with me taking things from MY homes that they were squatting in. Why did I burn the crops they were tending? Because black (ash) is coming back baby.
It feels like a console game though, and sometimes my viewpoint gets stuck to a bunch of minions, making me spin.
I've totally tricked out my Overlord pad, I got the flaming demon statues and dogs of hell gold plated. So far, doesn't server a purpose, just looks cool.
BTW, my general setup is twenty browns and ten reds. The reds are more powerful than you know, you just have to use them properly. They are best kept in back and perfect for pulling baddies towards you. You have to use a guard marker to fully use them properly. I haven't had a problem with their accuracy. Since I use ten as a rule, if three miss, seven hit. 7/10 is the ratio equivelant to a flaming dwarf, after two vollies of course.
I do however aggree with the greens being useless though. I don't like setting traps and the baddies sometimes sense them cloaked or walk into them and start swinging. Dead minions, are useless minions. No point to ressing either as souls are plentiful and you lose more blues trying to res than when you don't try.
No matter how good a horde you assemble, if you stand in the rear like a coward they will never be as strong as they can be. Always use the spells when outnumbered or overpowered. Beserk is your friend, lightening shield knocks them down and makes them easy pickings for the goblins.
I have the mace of that Sauron himself would be proud of, 100% knockback sends the foolish and the brave flying.
I love this game. It's like a more intresting version of Pikmin with much more death.
I played the demo and loved it its jsut a shame my pc isn't really too great to run it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> I wish I could afford an upgrade..

Try setting graphics to custom and turning almost everything down, but keep texture detail on medium. Turning off shadows makes a HUGE difference given how many people/minions can be on-screen at once.
And yeah, greens don't suck, they're just situationally challenged. Don't expect them to pack the same punch as browns, but save a few to jump on to anything big you might come across and stab stab stab!
Yeah we bad baby! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
Goes of to dimplus (site) for further inspection...
greens and reds are vital near the endgame though - there's some mobs and one boss that can only be hurt by them, and they're actually very satisfying to use in those situations...
