Are you safer in an SUV?
Check out this video
(Note, it's really blurry)

Kind of interesting how the arguement always goes that "You need a bigger car to be safe".
<a href="http://www.theicct.org/documents/ICCT_SippingFuelFull_2007.pdf" target="_blank">Not really the case</a>, infact quite the opposite.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the <a href="http://www.iihs.org/" target="_blank">Insurance Institute for Highway Safety</a> would be a much more reliable source for this type of information.
The reason SUVs are not safer is because of how easy they rollover. Single-vehicle rollover crashes accounted for nearly 50 percent of driver deaths in SUVs in 2002, 5 years ago.
I've almost never seen a post about anything other than the environment or somehow indirectly related.
That's not to say that those topics aren't interesting but it starts to get a bit old hat when it's repeated ad infinitum.
video was a bit crappy, and I hardly think that you can generalize this to all SUVs let alone call it a scientifically sound test to begin with. I'd be interested to know what original safety rating the vehicles had and how old the car models are, obviously newer better rated cars should withstand more impact.
this is really just entertaining TV, not something to take to heart.
e/ depot wins - what he said.
By design SUVs are more prone to rollover due to their high center of gravity - the normal driver is not trained to compensate for this. As I recall my old Bronco had a warning decal on the sun visor regArding this.

The car actually had a written warning on the car itself (not in documentation) basically saying "Warning: This car might roll over randomly on corners".
And you still bought it?
Crazy people....
And SUV's were meant for... outdoor areas? Wouldn't that increase the chances of rollover?

SUVs are meant to be bigger than the car in the next lane. It's called "compensation."

Back then (1988) SUV rollover was not publicized as it is now (afaik). The warning regarded the vehicles unique handling characterisitcs and cautioned unfamiliar drivers with the peculiararities of 4wd.
Rollover became an issue (at least publicized) when Consumer Reports busted the Suzuki Samurai for its dangerous propensity to roll over in emergency-steering situations. I believe this was in 1988. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />
...besides, how long ago did the Surgeon General start plastering cancer warnings on the side of cigarette packs? Did this stop people from purchasing them? I think not.
If you want to be safe while driving, drive a tank. Besides, everyone loves a big gun <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

The only draw back is while cars get miles to the gallon, tanks get gallons to the mile. Other than that, it'd be awesome to drive a tank to work.
The problem with the idea that a relatively larger vehicle is safer in a collision is that it causes an armsrace towards ever larger cars limited only by cost and income.

Not long ago this was quite true. Currently though Detroit has reversed its philosophy and fuel economy has become the primary issue - a good thing given the current gas price increases. Just look at all the hybrids out there now.

Vulnerable to armour-piercing weapon systems, which exist in man-portable form. Hell in an urban environment. You never know which of a thousand windows might suddenly send shaped-charge explosive death you.

Correct, SUVs are NOT designed for anytihng outside of paved streats. Infact one of the OTHER large problems with many SUVs is that the added weight+the added stupidity = more cracked axels.
People think the SUV should be able to go all-terain, so hopping the divider should be NO problem. They promptly find out that it is a problem.
Now if we are talking about compensation:

Seriously. I don't even particularly like Star Wars and know the difference.
Would look bloody awesome though <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":0" border="0" alt="wow.gif" />
Sure it all starts of with some light T-26 tanks then the neighbour gets a bigger sherman tank and suddenly we have panters, king tigers and Abrams scrapeing off the ceileing in public garages. Not even to mention those who get their hands on some live ammunition.

Can you imagine:
Mom: I will park over there.
Son: But Mom, thats a compact space.
*crunch,ieeeks,smash,splat*
Mom: What did you say honey?
Seriously: The sight of a tank in front of my neigbours house would really make me think about buying an even bigger tank <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />
My best guess is that they aren't manufactured directly on base and they ship 'em by boat to the nearest location then go the rest by conventional road.
To answer the thread's question: yes, yes I am...but unfortunately, you are not <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> .
You want safety, you buy a station wagon...not only can you fit like 6 kids in there and still have space for shopping materials and such, they're more economical, they're less ugly and they're generally safer in impacts. You just need to get passed the "only Grandma's drive those"-stigma usually associated with them, and referred to it as your "shaggin' wagon" (or something equally as clever).
Of course, you could just drive safer and not plow into someone head-on at 40 miles per hour, that generally increases survivability as well.

Yeah, but we are talking about earth based travel, so, airspeeder.
And yeah, station wagon all the way.
We should give them tanks to see what they do to them. Because it'd look hilarious.
