Alien Traps?

<div class="IPBDescription">Bear with me here...</div>Hey....I'm almost certain that someone is going to MS paint this suggestion, but....oh well. It was just an idea I came up with.

Now, let's first get something straight. I'm not talking anything as stupid as the suggested spike pit for the marines. I'm also not going to talk about spore mines. Here's the general idea:

I play a gorge very often. I think it's safe to say I'm a fairly good gorge, but one thing always bugs me: At the end of the game, gorges have two roles: Webbing and healing.

Now, I'm not saying these aren't important roles. After all, how else are all your allies going to stay alive? But all I'm saying is how about adding a new role to the gorges? After all, you can only build so many OC bases before you're running out of places to put them.

The traps that i'm thinking of don't involve great amounts of pain. At all. Essentially, these would just be fortifications that would annoy marines as they were walking towards a hive. Why? Because the traps would only work on Dynamic infestation. Thus, whatever is going to destroy the DI is an obvious counter.

The traps that I picture aren't anything like spikes, merely things that get in the way. For instance, for a low res cost, a gorgie could put down something that attracts insects. If the marine steps in it, then bugs will start to swarm him any anyone nearby, slightly obscuring vision and dealing a few points of HP. Maybe a small trap could merely parasite the marine without him knowing it?

These traps would just be little useful things that would distract marines using the DI, or proviode recon when marines try to enter the base. The traps would, of course, be barely visible and therefore avoidable. But I think this could be a fun, and useful, new addition.

I believe webs are esssentially intended to fill the "trap" role that you are talking about. I agree its boring being a fatty at the end of the game but if you already have 3 hives up (you mentioned webbing) and gorge is boring you, then you really can go whatever lifeform you want: the game is already decided.

The idea of the aliens manipulating the "dungeon" and the marines trying to counter those gamestate changes is intriguing, to say the least.

i remind me on a plugin that allow to put some "mines" as gorge.
maybe poison drops/mines, but work like spores

yes, i agree, traps would be needed in the infestation, so that players can either take their chances and sneak through it, or a full squad can go through and clean it up properly with the flamer

    someone say hl2 barnacles? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

You make a good point, as players' experience thus far has been limited to "WTH I EXPLODED".

Despite that, if players could catch traps through careful consideration of the environment, and then shoot them down or deal with them in another way (insert dynamic gameplay element here) it would slow the pace of the game, thus at least partially solving the numbness effect that caused much of NS's (excellent) atmosphere to be lost.

That's what I was getting at, really. It would add more strategy on the marines' personal parts as well as team parts, and aliens could also prevent that last-minute annoying sieges by seeing the marines.

Really, the idea is just to give the gorge a more important role other than simply "drop hives, drop towers, change into fade and kill."

Umm...Yeah. Right. I really said that I wanted the DI to do something like that to marines....

niz, you have one sick mind.

Sounds fun, though it wold be nice for Gorges to have traps with more of a bite in them.
There really should be more life forms though. Trying to make the gorge a healer/builder/anti-structure/trapper is just getting to complicated.

anti-structure only works if there isn't a turret spam.

That, and this would just make it more important for a team to have gorges, and more fun for people to play as them.

As long as it's counterable on the first-person level (and makes for fun, skillful gameplay on both teams) I'm for anything that makes the gorge's life more interesting.
