Allready mapping for NS2?

<div class="IPBDescription">ns_eclipse 2.0 (sourcified)</div>Hi there guys,

I started mapping ns_eclipse from Natural-Selection 2.0 today and got the Marine Spawn done. I don't know, if the time has allready come to start with such things, but this is the way how I will spent the time we have to wait till NS2 will be released <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

2 Screenies here:

Marine Spawn Pic 1:

This is how far I got today, I think I will do more progress tommorow <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

If you would start mapping allready, which map would you map?

PS: I posted this topic here, I don't see any other "area" that would fit this topic <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

A nice start, but it looks very similar to the level of detail of the original. Make sure to put in some extra brush detail to try and flesh it out a bit.

EDIT: I believe he's suggesting you build your own level. Perfectly reasonable I guess, but still I see no reason you can't be doing this as long as the team doesn't mind.

Sure, this will come later. I'm currently trying to "capture" the original design, then to improve it with more brushwork and so on(and for sure enviromental effects like env_steam etc pp). The only thing I can't do, is the textures :/ .

I think your best bet would be to start working on your own map instead of copying something from someone else.

While it's not required, it might be good to ask KFS for permission to see if he would be alright with someone trying to make a copy of his map.

Sure, this is indeed a fact, that I should do. But then the fact appears, that no map is copyrighted at all, that I haven't released this map, only showed of, what I'm currently doing so far. Sure, if I would release this map later on, latly then I would ask the original mapper, if I could release it, with giving credits to him for the original HL1 Version.

I'm familiar with all those rules etc, that are combined with re-doing maps, models, skins or sounds. I'm aware of the fact, that I can't just go on like nothing would be, release this map without giving credits to the original mapper and to claim this as my own personal work <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/marine.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::marine::" border="0" alt="marine.gif" />

    EDIT:

And it is not a really a copy at all, just a...let's say...re-work. This map is inspired by the original ns_eclipse from Natural-Selection 2.0, but I could change things here and there since I do this map on my own within a totally different enviroment(Hammer Editor, not WorldCraft).

To be honest, I think that's a bit of a mistake. I think it's worth taking into account the ability to use more detail right from the start of the design process, and, whilst you don't have to detail it right away, build the framework with that extra detail in mind. I've found that that's likely to make the additions seem more natural, and less like they've just been pasted onto the original.

However if you know what you're doing I see no reason why you won't end up proving me wrong. I just feel that thinking about it right from the beginning is likely to make it less of a spruced-up port and more of a full remake that does the engine justice.

Most people do it that way, I tried it that way as well and allways failed, dunno why <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />. So i start with the original basics and then I will re-work parts. I allways need the map in front of me in hammer, to know how it would look like after modding it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

    *stares at the walls*

Oh yeah, I remember that version of marine start. Thats the version from NS v2.01, right? Do you not particuarly like the current version of Eclipse?

On the topic of asking the original creator for permission: Technically, you don't <i>have</i> to ask for permission until you want to release the map, so its ok to make it on your own time. On the other hand, it would really suck to put in months of work, be 90% done, and THEN find out he's not going to give you permission and all that work is wasted. So you might as well ask sooner rather than later.

in my view, its not wasted work if you use small portions of copied work inside much larger original developements, an evolution or something clever.

My original post was commenting on how you don't known the game mechanics to NS2 yet and we don't know the level support + requirements. I personally believe mapping shouldn't start in true (intending to release the map) until we have confirmed Alien classes and abilities combined with Confirmed Marine armors (may be more then 3) and buildings. Also we have no idea what the economy looks like right now.

In short, you're making your own personal Jesus - no insult intended. Now, if you want to set the framework for an amazing map with no concrete details that sounds like a much better idea. In fact I’ll even offer my ability as a writer to do the text and story elements of the map (of which i believe there needs be more of). For Eclipse the first thing I’d put in is handwriting on one of the walls from an engineer who didn't quite make it. =D

sure you don't <i>have</i> to get permission, since it wouldn't be illegal (i think) but it would be extremely rude to copy someone's work without permission, even if it isn't an exact copy.

    To clear stuff out <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

I will, i repeat, i WILL ask for permission before I will work out to much or before releasing this map. Sure, I don't know, how NS2 will be, because this is only known to the NS Dev Team so far and NS2 Development is in very very early stages, so stuff will change, what has been planed so far. I don't think, that NS2 will be just a graphical re-creation from NS.

I'm a huge NS fan, I really love this mod and I found my way into mapping, because I like to create enviroments.

This "project" is not ment to be taken as serious at all for now. I love ns_eclipse from NS 2.01, the 3.x and 1.x version are not that good in my opinion, but everyone has his own opinion, i just said mine <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />. (That's why I even installed NS 1.x and 2.x just to include all maps from NS 1.x and 2.x into 3.x(3.2))

My way of mapping is maybe strange compared to others and I learned mapping totally on my own without using any tutorials at all(only some for getting rain, snow or so done). So I don't know what the normal way of mapping is, I have my own way of mapping. If I port a map from HL1 to HL2 Engine, then I mostly "copy" all the old enviroment and then I go on to modify it untill I think, that It looks like the old map, but fits the quality of the Source Engine.

I could post some screenshots from the map Osprey from SvenCoop here, that I'm currently porting to the Half-Life 2 Mod Obsidian Conflict. There you will as well see, that it mostly looks like the SC Version, but some changes(and I'm even not done with this map as well).

I will work on ns_eclipse_source (working title) untill I think, that I have enough done to improve it and to stop because of asking for permission.

When asked about whether old maps will be ported, I believe one of the devs said that they expect the community to do old NS map ports. So I would guess they are ok with it.

The only thing that has stopped me from starting a map for NS2 is the Tech Release. Not that I'm waiting for the textures or props, I could do the whole layout without it, but we have little to no information on how the game will be and how will the levels will have to be built, ie: minimum height and width of corridors (maybe we'll have some new bigger lifeforms?) resources system, hive system (maybe they wont be static?? In that case, making hive rooms would be useless), and all other little criterias that would need to be respected in order to create a fair, balanced and fun map.. So without all this information, I'm not moving my fingers any closer to my Hammer icon ^^!

    That being said, looks like a nice project you're starting there! Hope you'll have fun with it! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

I indeed have fun mapping this nice baby, but it takes much time, to get it done correctly :omg:

I will show more stuff in the next few days. Currently im trying to get more screenies from the map from different views etc pp.

All works of art are automatically copyright. There is no need to apply or register for copyright. Copyright probably does apply to a specific map, but you might get away with making a new map based on an old one.

It would be polite AND prudent, however, to ask the original author if he:
    a) minds
    b) is already making an updated version

Sure, I had some kind of another style for ns_eclipse in mind now. Will work on a new version. I will try to get some concept drawing done first, then I will work on the map <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" /> (but there will be serveral parts taken from ns_eclipse 2.x or 3.x). I will write the original mapper a mail, before I will start on this now.

Noticed it, will fix this. There is currently and allround imagehosting hack going around.

    Fixed:

No can do about this. I know a polish hacker, but he wont tell me, how this hack works, that can hack every image host.

i mentioned this in the i&s forums -why dont you make it eclipse part 2, as in don't copy it, make it look like a huge battle took place - ns2 is the war. so map what could have happened on eclipse during ns1 <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

I think that's even the wrong way to look at it - Eclipse or any other map with simply a cosmetic adjustment likely won't cut it.

    This is spot-on.

I'm flattered that anyone would take it upon themselves to try and re-make any level I've done for a new engine (hell, I've taken <a href="http://www.button-masher.net/images/wip/d3_eclipse_009.jpg" target="_blank">smaller steps</a> toward doing so myself), but I also don't think it's a great idea at this stage for an NS2 map. There's no telling what features or gameplay NS2 may bring - it may be identical, or it may be radically different. Perhaps different enough that Eclipse or any other NS1 map just simply doesn't work anymore.

I don't want to rain on any parades, but Charlie's always had some very lofty goals for NS2, and while it's yet to be seen where it lands, stuff like the announced dynamic infestation and lua scripting setup implies some big changes already. A lot of people have talked remakes of old maps, and that's exciting for those of us who have contributed them, but I think it's almost a disservice to what NS2 could be.

I have a series of sketches and rough layout bits here for what I'd imagine Eclipse II to be based on what I know of NS2 so far; the first thing I did putting these together was throw out virtually everything about Eclipse save for a focused layout and certain visual signatures (i.e. the thick wall supports found through much of the level, skylights, and the triad/keyhole style energy thingies). I'd encourage anyone currently thinking about making a remake of a NS1 map to do the same - keep in mind the things you like, whether in the layout or visually, and think about how to make it bigger and better. Then, as more info comes out about NS2 and what it'll be, it'll be more clear what direction(s) to take within a level for it.

That said, if you continue with this best of luck to you. It is up to Charlie how remakes will be handled (if at all), and be prepared for the possibility more than one person might feel like doing such a remake, but as far as I'm concerned it's definitely a compliment that anyone wants to take a stab at a map of mine and I'd be curious how someone else might approach it.

but yeah he's right, you guys should at least wait until they release that NS2TR thingy or whatever its called...

also, considering flayra will be purchasing the maps this time around, he would probably favour the original makers of the maps, or at least someone that has permission from the map maker to redo it, and maybe split the $$$. you've got to remember theres money involved this time around.

but i guess that wont stop anyone from making some custom maps when its released

pitty valve are stilling using hammer. the Doom 3 editor makes life a lot easier. - especially when it comes to lighting since you can try a few things realtime, or even in game.

Also a pitty hl2 doesn't compare to d3 detail wise.
