(episode 2)
according to ign valve canceled the black box, which was the box containing episode 2, portal, and tf2. they are only going to sell the orange box, which contains episode 2, portal, tf2, halflife 2, and episode 1.
it doesnt specify whether this means only retail or online or what.

So what're people going to do with 2 copies of HL2?

Bury 'em next to the pile o' E.T games, I guess.
it seems likely that they would only do this retail. if they did it online too, they would lose a lot of respect from their fanbase by forcing them to buy 2 things they already have, and valve has always kept in touch with their fans. the people that would only buy ep2, portal, and tf2, are the ones that already have steam and could buy it online, while the ones that would buy the orange box are the people that would most likely not have steam and not know about how to buy the games other than from a store.

Fair enough. I'm not really all that surprised that it isn't deemed economically feasible to cater the market of 10 some odd people who already have HL2 and EP1, but still refuse to buy games through steam.
Sounds about fair to me.
Every game from valve can be downloaded through steam. Maybe they will even go so far as to make seperate downloads possible for each game (I really only want TF2 and maybe Portal).

I think the point people were making was the Black Box was the cheaper option over the alternatives of the Orange box and downloading them all separately.
bittersweet >:(
Effing hell, if I knew they'd do this I would've waited on buying EP1 and just take this.
ffff.
Admitedly, for $10 more I am tempted to pick it up and give my GF HL2 and EP1 so that we game together more.

Well they freaking better. I only want TF2 and Portal as well, and they better not be more than $10 each.
For the people who already have HL2, Valve probably assumes(since you know, steam is required for HL2) that you know how to buy games over Steam and will do so.
What if you're not ABLE to do so? Then tough luck, screw you.

I'm one of the people who own HL2 (and Ep 1), have a card, can buy over steam, but still like to have a hard copy.

You could always print one out and put it on your shelf. That way you can prove your nerdiness AND buy online.

I'm the same way. I just like to have the boxes to show my gaming history. I'll still likely by the box in the store. This might actually be an interesting way to market the games though. Since many of the people buying the box will already have HL2 and HL2:Ep1, they'll have to give them to a friend. Then that friend will play through them and want to play the rest of the games, so they might buy the box and then have a copy of HL2 and HL2:Ep1 to give away and so on.

what about the people who like the boxed version of games without having to own multiple copies
