Good intentions can go so very, very bad. Sucks for the kids and the teachers are definetely at fault but I don't think anyone deserves money for it.

"We got together and discussed what we would have done in a real situation,"

So.... pretty much exactly what they did in this one, which they thought was real?

This is without a doubt one of the stupidest and craziest things I've ever heard. What, exactly, did they expect this to acomplish? To have kids say "Oh, it's not real, don't do anything" if it really happens?

Of course someone deserves money for this. Its impossible for anything to not be someone's fault these days, and if its someone's fault they can be sued.

This would have been better if they were simply trying to tell the kids what to do and of course let them know it's not real, you know like in fire drills and stuff?

Surprising them isn't going to help them.

The best part of all this is that I heard down the vine not long ago that my old highschool was going to try something like this. Only they were going to wait till all 1500 kids were in a big room, then the sheriff's department was going to storm in wearing camouflage and shooting blanks from live weapons.

    Ouch.

Thankfully a few of the teachers raised a stink before it went down.

Haha, oh wow. Then multiple kids are killed in the resulting stampede.

Here's what I want to know though, what ARE you supposed to do in a situation like this? Really? "Run away" would be the proper choice right? Wouldn't everybody do that ANYWAY? Or are you supposed to train the kids to charge the shooter?

The proper response is a 2 shots to the head 2 to the chest, tight grouping. Of course, for that to work all the kids have to be carrying guns, but the NRA is working fervently on that right as we speak.

    Win. I love that movie.

I think what they tell kids these days is to lock the door and pretend to be invisible. Most of these shooters aren't hardcore killers, so their adrenaline and what not are through the roof. They won't stop to bust into a door if it's locked if they think standing around too long is dangerous. Which it is.

Any shooters in these kinds of situations ought to understand that they're now on borrowed time. They won't be leaving alive unless it's in cuffs heading for a jailcell. My best advice would be for schools to invest in heavily reinforced classroom doors.

Running about and making noise is just giving the guy really easy targets.

actually, the 'duck and cover' program was more successful than people give it credit for. the objective was never to save anyone's life, if you get nuked you're pretty much boned. the objective was to calm the public and prevent panic.

I was actually referring to a staged assault on students and then telling them "this is not a drill!" when it is, in fact, a drill.

Some of the Civil Defense films are actually useful...they tend to be better when you get out of the 50s. I know there's one that basically shows having crap in your yard and a bad paint job on your home makes it more likely to catch fire from the heat of the explosion (...with actual atomic bomb tests on 2 or 3 houses). Sure it was in a desert, but still, nuking specially built homes just for a video: taxpayer money at work for good cinema.

(The morals of this thread so far: nuclear weapons derail threads easily; painting your home will make it less likely to catch fire, if it survives the blast wave from a nuclear weapon; a 'mock school shooting on a camping trip' is a bad idea for numerous reasons.)

see, the "we all hide in the classrooms" sounds like an almost halfway good idea. and it keeps the kids calm because they're "safe." the main problem here is that they actually tried to test their preparedness and found out just how well their master plan worked... kind of like dropping nukes on kids under particleboard tables and plastic chairs.

i remember in highschool, whenever the principal came over the intercomm and said "Code Red. This is a drill. blahblahsomethingsomething do not panic. Hide and go to your happy place" over and over again, we'd pick up a cordless drill (most of my classes were in the woodshop or the lab next to the woodshop) and wait next to the intentionally unlocked door so we could pull out the infinitely cheesey dundee line while pointing the tool at the SRO in a mildly threatening manner... good times

    No it isn't.

Jingoism is refferencing aggressive nationalism/foreing policy.

Go read Jingo by Terry Pratchet to get a good idea of jingoistic actions.

Oh, and bomb drills were fun in school!

Teach: File out of the classrom and don't stand infront of the doors

    Me: Why?

    Teach: To avoid flying glass

Me: What about the glass display cases that line almost all of the walls in the hallway?

    Teach: ....

Meh, duck and cover IS a good drill, it does protect you in the case of bombing, but only if it isn't a dirrect bombing. Lots of crappy thigns can happen to you even if you are decently far away from the blast )flying glass is actualy a problem)
