Might be worth noting, that DiscoZombie's description of Ultima Underworld II has reminded me of the months I lost solving that game. God, I was actually terrified at one point of going near the damn Spiders underneath Castle Britain, or fighting my way through the Prison Pits, or wherever.

God, I did love that game, the more I think of it. A game with that much originality and potential, built on a modern FPS engine? I'd die. Give me Cooperative multiplayer and a decent custom content creation capability, (woo, 4xC) and I'd pay for it several times over, gladly.

    I've wanted a proper hi-res widescreen wallpaper of that for so long, but I dunno if I'll even find one <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

System Shock 2 comes very, very close.

I actually like the first System Shock more, personally. I liked the retro feel and the exploration. Also, I enjoyed having a laser rapier that could kill things.

Simply put there just isn't any other games out there that do what NS does the way NS does it, and what NS does the way NS does it just happens to be exactly what is needed to make a game ridiculously fun and addictive to me personally.

I found NS to be really fun but mostly because of the people I played with. It was such a tight-knit community, it was like going to a bar every match. LunixMonster is long gone though, and I don't think NS would ever be as fun.

The BEST game I've ever played? Probably Kingdom Hearts 2 IMO... That game did so many things right it's sickening.

It failed in the "challenge" and "play length" sections for sure. Hell, the Gummi Ship levels were harder than any boss, even Sephiroth(And he was a push-over, sadly). Awesome game though, loved the story and game play, the drives were just hella fun.

A lot of my favorites are all ready up there, so I'll just add a couple that haven't been mentioned yet.

Kirby's Avalanche - I will kill you at this game. Period. This and Super Mario World are why I still have my SNES.

Warzone 2100 - My favorite RTS of all time. I loved customizing units and leveling them up to crush my opposition. Plus the music was good and gloomy.

Blast Doors - Something of a guilty pleasure, I still play it from time to time. Nothing beats a good Scorched Earth clone when you need a fix.

Quake 3 - Challenge Pro Mode Arena.

    Best game/mod ever.

Commandos 2. To date, the best rendition of a WWII setting IMO. Stunning graphics, perhaps the best soundtrack ever (movies and games combined), co-op. A clever, deep and replayable game, that simply hasn't aged.

Well, that's sort of the point of any given square game... They aren't supposed to be unplayably hard, you, who might even be an average or new gamer, not necessarily hardcore, are supposed to be able to comfortably sit and advance the story along. When you play a square game you sit and advance the story, you don't fight with the arbitrary single player environment simply to move forward in small steps, that would ruin the game.

I think KH2 was perfect difficulty all things considered. High difficulty levels are for multiplayer games and competitive games. Remember, KH2 didn't have a savestate or quicksave feature.

I agree, KH2 could have used a couple extra worlds to explore.

True, but the first one was pretty tough when it came to Bosses. Especially the secret bosses, that square always throws in and are hard, like Sephiroth. In the first game it was rape at any level. I beat him in KH2 without a hitch around LVL 70. Fighting him was bad-###### though.
