http://alkyproject.blogspot.com/ link the the guys blog.

I'm no programmer, so I can't comment on whether it's possible, but damn interesting and useful if it's true. My first thought would be MS nuking the project, but they haven't stopped WINE yet, so why this?

I read about this on slashdot I think it was. It wouldn't surprise me - vista sales aren't that great right now, they need all the "exclusive features" they can get.

I think i'll be getting vista with my next machine anyway, I don't like the idea of having to -hack- my games to run them. I suppose i'll wait and see how this pans out.

I'm dubious about running geometry shaders off the CPU. But hey, he either does it or he doesn't. Either way we'll know if it worked out.

This is gonna get absolutely trampled over by Microsoft once it buds out and almost takes shape. I've read in an article about their being extremely stubborn about vista being the only platform to support DX10 for a few reasons. Its supposed to help developers of future games to not have to tweak settings for all different video cards, and, well - it just makes them more money.

Legally I don't think they'd have a leg to stand on. There are well explored areas of law that allow this sort of thing. Reverse engineering is explicitly allowed by all intellectual property law.

There are many conditions in which reverse engineering is forbidden, most notably those governed under the DMCA. However, in this case, Microsoft do not have a leg to stand on, and the project has a legal precident with WINE ( which provides a framework to use components of a microsoft operating system on Linux ).

Either Microsoft support DX10 for XP or remove some of their "security" features to make Vista more functionable for computer users.

Or you let some random guy support Dx10 on XP for you at a fraction of the cost <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
